CorpusTV.com - God Saved Me Today, Mother in Heaven Watched Over Me, and My GPS Helped
February 8, 2008. Corpus Christi to Padre Island to Port Aransas. By Mr. C. KIM McGuire, Coastal Area Real Estate Realtor
It was one of those days to thank my blessings again. I say it everyday, but today was an added bonus to say "Thank You God," "mother," and "GPS."
On my drive to San Antonio, about 20 miles out from down town, I heard a loud thrashing from the right front side of my Honda Civic. I thought I had run over something because I saw something flying from the right side of the road, or it was something to do with my tires. Even after that loud sound I continued to drive to my destination with some lingering sound from the right front and little steering wobbling. When I pulled into the hourly parking lot, I looked at the right front and examined it briefly because I had to be on time to my meeting. I didn't notice anything on the quick inspection. I went to my power meeting which was highly satisifying! Now, I need that meeting to be rewarding! I thank God that I made it because it was one of those opportunities that one cannot miss!
After that meeting, I hopped back into my car and made my way back onto I-37 South back to Corpus Christi - Padre Island. After several miles, the car started making lots of noise! I thought it was a combination of the rough – grooved highway and the car. Immediately thereafter, I knew something was up with the right front tire because the sound was getting louder and the steering was sending some anticipation of a crash to my brain. I drove several miles more looking for signs for tire shops or Sears. I neared an exit to a chain Discount Tire shop. With only seconds before the exit, I decided to drive further and see what happens to the car. The car started making much more noise and the steering wasn't all that kosher. Now, I knew I gambled not pulling off the previous exit for Discount Tire. With that exit gone, I turned on the car flashers and started driving 60 - 65 mph, instead of my usual 75 - 80 mph. I drove down I-37 looking for a rest stop to re-examine the car. After about 10 miles of driving, I pulled off an exit ramp and examined the right front tire again. Upon a very thorough examination, I noticed a HUGE chunck of thread had come off the tire. "WOW!" went through my head with my mouth wide open! I thanked God again at that point and thought to myself, "I should have gotten off that previous exit and had the tire examined." Now the only thing going through my mind was finding an exit with a tire shop before I bit the dust. I didn't want to put on the spare donut wheel either. I guess I was a risk taker at that moment again.
After getting back on the highway, I set my Garmin GPS 680 to display all the stores and their exits. Sure enough, I saw a nearby exit with a Sears. I took that Exit this time! This exit was immediately off the major highway in a small town outside of San Antonio (I believe it was Pleasantville or Pleasantown). I reached the small Sears store with the flashers blinking still. Went inside hoping that they would have an auto department. Checked with the manager. No Go. I asked the nice gentlemen where I can find a tire shop besides the Ford dealership across the street. He pointed me in the right direction to a tire shop and Wal-Mart. Being the savy tire guy, I went to Wal-Mart. In about 45 minutes and a quick bite to eat at the food court, they got a pair of Goodyear tires on and off I went back onto the highway to Padre Island. All of my body parts were in tact!

Lessons Learned: I could have been killed and/or injured others with that extremely damanged tire. Thank our blessings each and every day because it just may be the last. Always thank our mothers who are watching over us even when they are in heaven like mine is. Yesteday was her birthday and today was mine again! Maintain our vehicles to perform at their best. Conduct an occassional safety check of our vehicles (especially the tires for correct inflation and good tread)!

Kim - Sounds like an accident waiting to happen. You were fortunate that you stopped when you did and thanks goodness for Walmart (WallyWorld). The town is Pleasanton, TX, a nice friendly town, my brother lived there for a short time years ago.
Glad you had a good meeting in S.A.
S.A. Spurs play tonite so going to watch the game on TV. I have inspection in the morning; I don't like Saturday inspections but trying to help these folks out. It is getting more and more difficult for people to take off from work and I really like for them to attend the inspections if at all possible.
Have a good evening.
