Spring Cleaning a Smith Mountain Lake Home

Last weekend, community volunteers gathered to take on our annual Take Pride in Smith Mountain Lake lake cleaning day, highlighted in our last news update. But the lake isn’t the only part of SML that can use a good spring clean. Your lake area home is another place where a day of rubber gloves, soap suds and deep scrubs will make the summer season that much more pleasing. We turn to HGTV’s spring cleaning tips for a few ideas on how to tackle the most challenging household jobs with expert efficiency.

Spring weather makes it a perfect time to tackle the windows. If you can divide and conquer this job, assign one person to the glass and another to a good wipe down of the sills and frame. Use a pressure washer on a light setting to hose down shutters.

Send linens to the laundry. Make sure to include those materials that don’t get regular attention such as drapes, comforters, shower curtains, throw blankets and rugs.

Dust from top to bottom. Aim for the highest places, ceiling fans, the top of crown moulding and tall furniture first. Following with a thorough dusting of all shelves, wall hangings, furniture and cabinets. Use a damp cloth for places with more dust build up.

Clean appliances. Set the oven on self clean on a day when you can leave windows open to let out fumes and tackle yard work while it cleans. Remove items from the fridge and freezer and wipe down with disinfectant.

After conquering all of the cleaning jobs you can do yourself, schedule professional cleaning for carpets and fireplaces.
