A Little Different Look and Feel

ActiveRain Gets a New Header Design

Lots of fun announcements taking place recently.

This is one that I'm really excited to get to share with you. Depending on when you are reading this, you may already notice something a little different about the look and feel on the top of the ActiveRain site. This newly designed header for the site is the first step in a pretty decent renovation that will take place over the coming months on ActiveRain.

This is just the first step in the redesign

We'd love to have you play around with it. Functionally there isn't too much change. We are trying to bring a little bit more order to where you find things on the site. As with any kind of change it will take just a tad bit of getting used to. A couple of links that you might have been used to clicking in a certain spot may have moved slightly. The mega menu drop downs still hold everything that the header menu held before.

In the future you can expect to see some pretty major upgrades to the layout of your blog posts and also your profile on ActiveRain. As I said, this is just a first step in the process with the primary focus being:

  • To make ActiveRain more visually appealing
  • To have more responsive design and a better consumer experience
  • To allow you to generate more leads from your blog
  • To give the site a more current look and feel

We've continued to make iterative adjustments to the SEO on ActiveRain to get more traffic and better rankings. We'll also continue to work on the stability of the site throughout the redesign process (Although we have already made dramatic improvements there). Many of these changes are so minor as not to be noticed but are important to keep ActiveRain in a position to get your content ranking in the search engines.

Would love your Feedback

As we will do in the future, we let our Ambassadors take a spin with the new layout and will be taking their feedback to make minor adjustments as we continue to refine the user experience on the site. Let us know what you think and please, if you have any questions or something doesn't seem to be working like it should, or you can't find something, leave a comment here. We'll be looking at your feedback as well.

The experience to get you to the other side!

So far, so good.  Change is NOT always good, but I like the clean look.

Just something new to adjust to, but I'm sure all will be well, given time.

I do have one question which I was going to address to you heading AR, but that feature has been removed.  Previously, when I went to review Traffic, it gave me the number of times that my Profile had been reviewed.  I was going to write to AR to see if and how, we could track or identify who and where these were coming from.  Before my previous website carrier went down and closed abruptly, my previous website had a feature identifying where and what links all my visitors were coming from.  This helped me to identify where my marketing efforts were working well.

Now I notice that this Feature has been removed from the Traffic section.

Any ideas or comments?

Thanks for reading.

I like the fact that you are continually striving to improve AR.  I wish you would go back to the old way of putting comments on one page.  It's much more difficult to keep track of comments over multiple pages.  If it's not possible to put them all on one page, at least increasing the allowable number of comments on each page would be an improvement.

Bob - things don't seem to be working right when I use G+ button.  I can no longer change the picture from the AR button.  Hopefully, you guys can fix that soon. (I'm using firefox, if that helps).

Brian- Above the numbers and a little to the right, you'll see a 'Show All' button.  This is an easy one click to have all comments displayed so you don't have to navigate from page to page.

Hi Kerrie - I very quickly looked at a small portion of the changes that have been made.

I find the flyout windows that appear whenever the mouse cursor goes by the top row of menu options to be rather annoying.  If I want to see the list of featured posts or product reviews, I can simply go to the homepage.  I don't need to see a huge flyout everytime the cursor is near the top of the screen.

Also, I don't see the "States / Province" menu anymore on the home page or the other pages.  I would have thought that this would be very useful to find people in various locations across Canada and the USA.

Active Rain.  The look is great but the drop down every time the mouse howers over it is annoying.

I agree that the mouse activated flyouts are annoying, and way to big

Bob/Kerrie - not sure if you saw Roger Mucci's post:

http://activerain.com/blogsview/3731171/the-new-look-is-good-the-new-features-are-fine-but-those-drop-down-menus-

I think this captures an issue that needs to get fixed somehow and it's annoying a LOT of us.  Overall, this change is good, but the drop down menus are a huge annoyance.  It would be easier if you clicked/scrolled on the menus (like most websites) rather than it popping up when you scroll over.  Also, if you insist on having it pop up, at least limit it to the actual space of the menu.  Right now, when I scroll over the gray line below w/ the second menu, the top menu pops up and also the white line in between.  It's really annoying because then you have to scroll over tot he side to unsee the menu and then scroll back under. I hope that made sense.  Overall, I really do like this and there are fewer clicks, but his is one big annoyance that I hope you can fix.

The appearance is great but as some have stated, the flyouts, when you are working on a blog, etc... are somewhat annoying. Perhaps it will just take a little time to get use to it. Other than that - everything is awesome!!!

Debbie,

I have raised your concern with our developers about the hover vs. click options on 'resources' and 'blogs'. I'm waiting to hear from them why we did it the way we did it and how much time it will take to change it. Based on what they tell me, we will certainly look at changing to a click option.

I think it looks great, but am with the annoying hover drop-down.  I will tell you that when I am on my Macbook Air which I use for traveling, it is difficult to get to the "View More" option because it is below the fold.  The drop-down for featured blogs on the Blogs button is overkill since those featured blogs are the first think you see when you sign on.  Thanks
