Who doesn’t like to do a little gardening in the NC and GA mountains?

Gardening and Canning in Murphy NCWho doesn’t like to do a little gardening in the mountains? Sure we had a small garden on our city lot when we lived in South Florida - it was a great space for our son to play outside and pick veggies right out of the garden and help us dig in the dirt.
But one thing we really dreamed of while planning our move to the Murphy NC mountains was to have a big garden and plant lots of fruit trees.

When we first moved here to Cherokee County NC in 1997 we had lots of apple trees and grapes already on the property. We also found out about the local Cooperative Extension in downtown  Murphy NC  for information on pressure and water bath canning, different plant varieties, soil and pest control and we even bought some blueberry bushes from the annual plant sale they have.

Now canning was a whole new experience for us and one we were really eager to learn. The Extension office will test your pressure canner and also offers classes. You just won’t believe how much better your own canned jelly or green beans taste!

No matter what size or type of gardening you choose, this is a relaxing and rewarding way to spend time outside and enjoying our beautiful mountains and weather!  Here is a great link to  Gardening Tips  that we got from the local Cherokee County Cooperative Extension that has lots of tips and information to help you get started planning your garden too.

Lee and Carol,

Kudos to you!  When I lived in Minnesota with my parents, I had friends whose mothers would can/mason glass jars all sorts of things, it was fun helping!  Enjoy!

Thanks Alexandra. We do enjoy the gardening - especially with the long summer days! Canning has been fun too and I love seeing all the canned jars in the pantry. With your long growing season and wonderful farmers markets there in CA, there's no need to do all this fun work :)
