ActiveRain Is Moving On by Bill Roberts
I just read Nikesh Parekh's (CEO of ActiveRain) announcement that Market

Leader is being acquired by Trulia.
It was deja vu all over again. I've seen this movie.
I found the comment thread very interesting. I just had to comment myself.
I left the following comment:

I would like to offer a little perspective. Back in the early days of ActiveRain

we were all very concerned how the boys would monetize AR. We knew that

we had a great deal with ActiveRain but we couldn't see how the guys who

started it (Jon and Matt and the rest) could possibly sustain the platform.

After all, they were giving us a lot and not getting anything in return.

So the questions being discussed were:
•Would they start to charge us?
 •Would they "sell" our content?
•Would they sell advertising on our blogs?

I guess it never occurred to us that they would sell AR and just walk away.

Bob Stewart's reference to Brian Brady's comment on "quid pro quo" stems

from the discussion about our content on the AR platform. After all, we had

gotten great SERPs from posting on AR. What was in it for them?

Now we know. They sold out.

And life went on. Everybody has to make decisions in their own best interest.

And, as for Katerina's concern about losing her hard won position on Google

for certain keywords, all I can say is that Google search engine page results are

their business. She has learned to play the game. She gets good results. But

Google has always tinkered with their algorithm. Nothing stays the same. I'm

sure she will adjust, just as she always has. She is a Superstar.

Change happens. It is what life is all about. Can you imagine what life would

be like with no change at all?

Embrace this change and run with it.

Let me know what you think.

Well Bill, I don't think it makes a whole lot of difference what any of us think.  They didn't ask us first did they?  So, what happens will happen and we will either roll with the tide or not.  Each of our attitudes will decide our future...I'm keeping mine good.

Bill Change is life and it never ends - ever!  I embrace change and I'm quite certain everyone will figure out the best avenue for them personally. I'm betting that AR will improve even more..........always has before.

Anna, we've lived through it before. This time will be no different.

It's nice to hear from you.

MarketLeader is a public company.  They have a fiduciary to their stockholders.  If this is good for stock holders that's it.

As I recall, the original AR management group did try to engage advertisers.  Sadly, the system was so technically defective, it's no wonder few interested.

Market Leader, IMO, saved AR.  While not as smooth as some high tech sites, it works.  Fact is, Google loves it and that's all I care about.

My profile page is a PR-3 and has a respectable number of back links.  In fact I see my profile in Google SERP regularly.

My AR site feeds my web pages and that's my goal.

I wouldn't be spending the time I do on AR if it didn't satisfy some needs.

Do I plan to diversify?  Sure.  HA!  Every time we get an announcement about changes to AR, I diversify more.  Then I'm right back.

Anna, It's not the same old AR as it was back when we got started. We all had lots of time back then because of the melt down. We all needed more business. We grabbed on to this idea of blogging. We produced great content. Google loved us.

Last month AR was doing meetups. I agreed to hold one. I had great expectations. Only one person showed up.

Back in the day we had some great meetups. Now it seems that a lot of us have moved on. AR just isn't our main focus anymore.

This change isn't a radical change, just incremental. I, for one, don't really care. The magic is already out of the box.

Your market was one of the hardest hit. Now it is one of the best performing residential real estate markets in the country. Rejoice.

Hi Lenn, I know you spend a lot of time on AR and it has paid great dividends.

When Jon and Matt and Caleb started ActiveRain it was for their own real estate business. Somehow, they got the idea that they would get better results for their blog site if they had a lot more bloggers. It worked.

They made some money in real estate. but they weren't making anything from AR.

It was inevitable that they would sell out.

It is also inevitable that Google will change their algorithm. Change happens.

I know that you will stay on top no matter what happens. The cream always rises to the top.

I'm happy about my time on ActiveRain because I've had the great pleasure of meeting you (virtually, that is) and a few others.

Thank you.

Interesting comments, I guess time will tell exactly what impact those changes will have.
