  South Kent Wind Project

Holds Ground Breaking Ceremonies April 30/2013

The South Kent Wind Project moved one giant step closer to a reality when ground breaking ceremonies were held in South Buxton on April 30. The project, a joint venture by Samsung Renewable Energy and Pattern Energy was in the news last week for its pledge of $11.5 Million to the Chatham-Kent Community Foundation over the next 20 years. The project is expected to be completed in 2014. It is the first joint venture for the two Corporations and only the second in Canada.

Once completed the project is expected to inject more than $7 Million in direct spending into the local economy each year. Pattern CEO, Mike Garland, expressed his thanks for the local support which the project received. he said that workers and subcontractors from across south- Western Ontario will be involved in every aspect of the venture. Siemens in Tillsonburg will manufacture the the turbine blades and as a result the factory is increasing production and hiring to ramp up to full production, a welcome bit of news in todays economy. CS Wind of Windsor is making the towers. These two factories are expected to create up to 600 jobs in the province.

RES Canada Construcion Ontario is the main contractor. Vice President, Peter Clibbon who was at the ground breaking ceremony said 'the South Kent Wind Project will inject tens of millions of dollars into the economy during the year-long construction period, while utilizing local materials and creating hundreds of local jobs.' Local subcontrators will be involved in various stages of the project such as building access roads, installing foundations and erecting the turbine towers.

One of the landowners, Bob Andruchow, on whose property the turbines are being installed said he is very proud to be part of the project and he believes the revenues generated by the turbines help farmers ' bullet -proof their operations" Mayor Randy Hope believes that " Renewable Energy is something we need to move on"

There has been some contraversy about the wind turbines and time will be the real test but you cannot argues with new jobs, increased revenue and additional funds injected into our community.
