Why do People Kill Houses in San Diego or Insert Your Town Here?

I know you may be asking what is he talking about?  I see it everyday from many different people.  Here are a few examples.

  • Distressed homeowners in foreclosure will take stuff like the A/C unit, kitchens, bathrooms, will punch holes in walls etc
  • The young party crowd, find a vacant rural home, tweet it and a rage party is born, I've seen homes die from this activity
  • Agent photos, my gosh, might as well stick a fork in your listing, it's done (trash, dirt, toilets, repairs etc)
  • The appraiser, we've all seen them kill deals and sometimes the house goes too, by by listing
  • The buyer, rip it apart verbally outside after viewing thus killing a sale
  • the owners stop paying the mortgage as spend the money on TVS, cars etc.  Angie Perez  http://activerain.com/agentknowhow

I had to read what you meant by "murder houses."  Glad to know you weren't talking about houses where murders took place.

Michael, the simple answer here is that they can. It's not a crime for a homeowner to abandon their house and leave it in disarray. It's not a crime for a homeowner to stop paying mortgage for two years and buy flat screen televisions for every room and have a hummer parked outside their front door. It's indifference without tangible consequence from the law or from moral/spiritual beliefs. What exactly am I looking at in the picture? A shed I hope! I haven't been to San Diego, but property damage happens on the East Coast in my neck of the woods often.

I've been doing inspections for the banks for quite a few years now. This is a house with the stuff on top of it and a shed with the blue tarp on top. If anyone remembers the beginning to the Beverly hillbillies when they live in the hills, I got to tell you I've seen quite a few of those in parts of our county. Some are abandoned but others are rented by the non-paying the mortage owners and the rent used as income. Then the tenants get a free 90 days of rent after the bank takes over or relocation assistance ($3-5,000).

Since the banks are now providing incentive money to not destroy the home, I have been seeing less of this crime.  This is one area that I do think that there should be a law passed stating something like making it illegal to destroy your home until you own it free and clear.  Otherwise, you are definitely going to jail for 1 to 5 years.

@Roger I agree, do you think the rising home values are contributing as well?
