But In My Family

By
Real Estate Agent with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Metro Brokers

Not everyone's family is like this. But in my family, a very large family I might add, they are not supportive at all. Before they allow me to help them buy or sell their home they would go to a complete stranger. Someone they have never met. And no it is not because I am not a trustworthy, compassionate, loving individual. It is because they are so scared that I will get ahead of them. Yes ahead of them. In finances, bigger home, bigger car, and so forth. But because of who I am in Christ I am already ahead. And I am thankful that my riches or success will not come from them. My success comes from God. God has already told me how to be prosperous and successful in Joshua 1:8. I am wonderfully blessed to know Who is blessing me.

In my family people have the mentality that they don't want to see others get ahead in life. I always believe that if you are blessed with something, the same God that blesses you will bless me. I am always thanking God for others blessings and asking Him to continuously bless them.

And one other thing, since I have been in this business I always always expose myself to everyone that I am a realtor. There have been about 6 or 7 family members, I mean close family members, who have bought, sold, bought and sold homes. But everyone seems to say, "Oh I forgot you were a real estate agent". But that is okay. I smile and say, God Bless I am so happy for you.

So be thankful for supportive family members.

I learned a long time ago never quote politics or the bible in business.  Bad mix.

I learned a long time ago what goes around comes around.  If you live your life and do your business the right way you will be rewarded despite your family.  I have never received referrals from my immediate family, however, it's coming.  My son has given me several referrals that I have referred on to others because they are out of my jurisdiction and because they are young men in the service of our country I have refused to accept a referral fee but have asked that that fee be given as a credit towards their closing.  I believe, that in the end it is not about the money, but rather how I touch others lives and how I help them to realize their true potential and that in itself is a reward.

Sonya In the long run you may be better off. Knowing who you are in Christ is first second and third most important anyway. Everything else will follow.

I have found that to be true in my family also. I have seen 8 of my relative either buy a home or sell one right in my back yard. But as soon as they have a problem with the deal they always call me for advise.

Hi June, thanks a bunch.  Believe me I do know it is coming.  I am very thankful that I am very comfortable with myself and knowing that I always want to do the right things.

Yes Thomas, so true that they come back to you.  I had a friend who had an agent but he called me to ask "what earnes money was".  He did not want to feel dumb by asking his agent.

Sonya~I went through this with a best friend of mine through childhood and after discussing the situation with seasoned agents, I have realized and know in my heart now that I'm not going to be everybody's agent and no matter who I work with I'm so grateful and blessed by each of them.

Sonya - Family are the greatest at "forgetting" what we do! :-) It's best to separate and be blessed if they do choose you. (in my opinion). I have a family full of tire kickers. They keep promising to use me - but they won't ever move! What's better?

I know the feeling.  Makes me think of a line from a song:

"But it's all right now, I learned my lesson well.
You see, ya can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself"

I have seen this before in friends but I, too, realize I can't be everyone's Realtor of choice.  What is meant for me will be for me.  You have a great attitude and outlook and it's because of your priorities.

Great job!!
