How To Hire A Reputable Home Improvement Contractor

By
Real Estate Agent with Deb and Joe Corcoran, Keller Williams Real Estate

Many people are taking advantage of some great deals in the real estate market by buying foreclosed or bank-owned homes and fixing them up, either for themselves or as investment properties.  These homes usually need some renovations before they are suitable to live in.  Some of these buyers are do-it-yourselfers, while others will hire someone to do bigger or harder renovations.  Unfortunately, stories of inept or criminal behavoir by contractors are reported all the time, including two recent events in North Bethlehem and in Upper Macingie Township.

So how do you hire contractors without getting taken to the cleaners?  I do whatever I can to help people who call me for advice by recommending reputable contractors that I've worked with in the past, but unfortunately I don't get a chance to talk to everyone.  If you're planning any kind of renovation project I highly recommend an artice I recently saw that was published by the Federal Trade Commission.  It's called "Home Sweet Home Improvement", andit contains a PDF guide to help you pick the right company for your next job.

Here's what you'll find in the guide:

·         The types of home improvement specialists

·         How disreputable contractors operate

·         Questions to ask contractors

·         How to check references

·         Understanding payment options

·         The "Home Improvement" loan scam

·         ...and several other useful points

Here’s the link to the article on the FTC website:
