Making Your House a Home For New Fur Members of The Family

By

It is amazing how one can shuffle through life at a steady and regular pace, then suddenly enter a cycle more like a tornado, tearing up solid ground and putting a chunk under it.

That’s been my story the past couple months.  Among all the activity, I took on a little home maintenance work.  There have been joyous family celebrations and holidays.  And, on Mother’s day two new family members came to live with me!

For those who follow my blog, you’ll recall a few weeks ago, I wrote a blog titled, “Beware of Friendly Faces,” the story about my son and daughter-in-law opening their door to a friendly cat on the doorstep.  Shortly thereafter the feline made itself at home, while carrying a short lived secret. She was pregnant with kittens!

On Easter morning, the smaller than usual mama cat gave birth to 6 adorable kittens in assorted colors.  My intention was to take just one – the little calico.  However, as the days progressed, I fell in love with the little peach colored kitten with the turquoise eyes as well.

I call the calico female, “Camilla.”  The little peach colored male is “Ruben.”

I haven’t had young kittens in years.  I had totally forgot how energetic, playful and outrageous they sometimes are.  Although they seem very co-dependent on each other, they have settled in nicely, while taking over my bed.

I must admit, I love the sound of purring in the darkness of the night!

Gratefully, there are wonderful resources on the Internet to help families make their new fur family members comfortable.  They are as follows:

From Kitten Rescue: Tips for making your new cat feel at home

From “The Cat Channel”: Making a New Cat Feel at Home

Kathy - There is good reason we have the push to spay and neuter animals.  The "Awwww" factor, stops us dead in our tracks, and it's difficult to deny it!  Left unabated, the globe would have 12.6 dogs or cats for every man, woman and child:-)

Tom - I had told my family there would be no more pets for me, other than my dog.  But, those cute faces wouldn't take no, for an answer.

Patricia - They can almost instantly bring down the stress level.  No wonder pets are used for therapy!

Joni - Purring is better than those little gizmos that make sounds like waterfalls to help you sleep:-)

Myrl,

You have the heart of gold! You're nurturing and kind. You are definitely a proud descendant of Mother Nature and I give you R-E-S-P-E-C-T!

Those little fur balls with those big beautiful, curious eyes really do get to you!

They are so cute, and you're right, they are a bundle of energy.  It's amazing.  Having 2 is great as they will entertain each other and keep the young energy alive.

William - It is odd, but the house simply feels better, more comfortable with them around.  I had thought my dog Kodi and I were just fine, and we were.  But, somehow it's different.  Amazingly, Kodi ignores the kittens, much like he did when I had my previous cat.  The kittens did their customary "fffft-fffft" routine in front of his nose a couple of times, and that was it.  Everyone has learned to coexist:-)

Patricia - Yes, it's all about those eyes that get to you alright!

Debbie - I cannot believe I didn't remember how much raw energy a kitten can exhibit. . .Absolutely astonishing:-)

I can totally see the appeal of Ruben. Those eyes. Oh, man. They just grab you by the heart. The two of them curled together, they will be so happy to have each for playmates. I suppose having kittens is similar to having babies -- if you can remember what it's like, you'd probably never do it again, but it all becomes a faded memory and only the happy parts remain. You forget about the clawing of the drapes, jumping into waste paper baskets and throwing stuff everywhere, jumping all over you at 3 AM when you're sound asleep. These guys are so danged cute. That's their saving grace. If it weren't kittens, we'd have no cats.

Myrl,

What is not to love in your pictures.  I love the shot of the cuddling duo...how sweet is that?  A home always feel better with furry creatures in it, cats, dogs, etc.  I love the purring when I occasional get up at night.  It is a conforting sound.  Mine have nto ourgrown their kitten antics, which as William says make you smile or laugh out loud.  Enjoy! A

Myrl,

Those are so adorable, I used not be a cat person when I was younger and now I just love cats. When I was in Istanbul there was a restaurant that had this little cat and I fed it. It had a great personality and if I could have figured out a way to get it home I would be showing you my cutie pie. I do have a picture at home so I will send it to you later. I have thought about the kitty since I have been here wondering if it is okay!

I am a dog guy but after seeing these photos and reading how much fun you are having with these little beasts I am heading for the animal shelter. Where are my keys Meryl?

Enjoy your new family members. They are very cute. Pat Kennedy would advise that you now need a dog to go with the kittens.

Myrl, the only way to avoid adopting a kitten, or puppy, is to not see it. God made them adorable for a reason! I'm glad you got 2. They'll keep each other company!
