May Denver Home-Maintenance Checklist

By

We are well into the month of May and you may be wondering what you can do to maintain your Denver home now that the weather is starting to warm. Did you know that the sun’s ultraviolet rays can be lethal to many of the harmful bacteria that may be living in your home?  Use this month to get your home ready for summer by following these tips.

Tender loving care to your cooling system

With the rapidly changing temperatures, you may not be prepared for that one warm day that pops up on us and you need to turn your air conditioning on. Before turning your air on for the first time be sure to change or clean your filter. Remember to change the filter every few months while it is in use.

If you have a central air conditioning unit there is a pipe that drips condensed moisture to the ground and it may become clogged, which would result in water backing up into the house. Clean this line by simply removing the cap and pouring a cup of bleach into it and let it drain to the ground.

If you have a window unit air conditioner check for the growth of algae and mold. If algae or mold is noticed pour two cups of bleach into the condensation drip pan.

Furnace Needs

As warmer weather approaches it is time to turn the furnace off for the season.  Check your furnace filter and change if it is dark and dirty. Consider calling a professional to perform an annual service on both your furnace and your air conditioner.

Vacuum Cleaner

May is a good month to take your vacuum cleaner outside and remove the bag to clean, that way you are not releasing any dust or allergens back into your home. Gently wipe down the parts of the inside of the vacuum cleaner with a warm soapy rag, and be sure to not get water in any electrical parts.

Refrigerator Maintenance

Remove the lower cover off the front of your refrigerator and with the wand attachment from your newly cleaned vacuum gently suck out any dust that has worked its way into the area underneath the fridge.

Windows

Take this month to clean all your windows inside and out, and wash any window coverings you may have.  Do not forget to clean the window trim too.  For the outside of the windows clean the glass and remove the residue with a high quality squeegee.

On a warm sunny day remove the window screens and lay them out. Hose off each screen and allow it to dry before putting them back on your windows.

Irrigation Systems

The freezing and thawing of winter can leave the ground around your home and even pipes and hoses outside your home with cracks.  If you have an irrigation system turn the water on to check and see how the water pressure is.  Take this time to look for any leaks, breaks, or water that may be pooled near sprinkler heads.
