Am I a fogy?

Real Estate Agent with The Charlotte Home Team/Keller Williams 56005

Charlotte:  As we entered the closing attorney's office near Park Road Shopping center, in a very high demand, well located and established part of town, the first thing we saw was the receptionist in jeans and a tank top that left nothing to the imagination. The seller looked at me with raised eyebrows. Being the listing agent in this sale of a nearby home in Madison Park, I did not get to choose the closing agent and did not know this particular attorney. Everything had gone well so far so I had no reason for concern.

really? When the young woman came from the back office with papers in hand in short shorts and flip flops, I was hoping she was a client and not the paralegal. I was wrong. Two other office workers were dressed similar, if less revealing, attire.

The closing attorney had on an old golf shirt, Dockers and loafers with no socks. The documents were all signed and sent to the court house to be recorded and we left...wondering. Were they all going to the beach after work? Okay, we live in the South and it was Friday but rubber flop flops? Really?

Am I the only one who thinks that flip flops are not appropriate in an office, nor are short shorts, cleavage, midriff bludge or your heinie hanging out of you pants like a 3 year old with droopy drawers?

I have noticed lately that many, if not most, of the new agents that come to talk about joining our firm come dressed in jeans, sometimes skinny jeans...sometimes real skinny jeans. I'm not saying that they are "walmartians" but there are some people who need to put on some clothes!

Styles are changing and becoming more casual and comfortable and that is understandable. After all we don't wear hooped skirts anymore, but honestly; has it gotten so bad you can't buy a belt, a blouse that covers all your parts? Does everyone have to see everything???

If you work in a cubicle and no ever sees you, or only a few co-workers interact with you in person, I don't supose it matters much what you wear or what you look like. Our top agents in this Keller Williams Southpark office, who also happen to be top agents in the Keller Williams Carolinas region, dress like adults.  business appropriate

They say clothes make the man...still?

I'm sure every generation goes through the transition where their standards of decorum are challenged by the next generation.  Was I really one of a generation challenging the standards of those above me?  Was I more respectful of the cultural mores of my elders then those younger than I today? Just like the prices of houses, the marketplace - whether you and others choose to use this attorney's office in the future or not - will determine what "professional" attire is more valued.  I'm betting on something more conservative than you described!

Tom,  You are right. You never know who you are going to meet.  The most expensive home I ever sold was to a young man who showed up in my office in a bathing suit, old tee shirt  and flip flops.  He owned a software company and turned out to be one of my favorite clients ever.  He bought a beautiful watefront  home on Lake Norman.

Jeff,  I know.  I was part of the long haired, freaky people,  baby boomer generation.  We drove our parents crazy!  Talk about our generation!
