Valerie has some pertinent advice for us this week.

Great advice Valerie, my grandfather who used to be a sheriffs deputy used to mention that when most people see a truck with a ladder on top going through a neighborhood they assume that it is a contractor, the police look at these folks as burglars looking for an opportunity, so have your neighbors watch for these trucks.

What can these four things have to do with your home security?

Security Cameras.  Install these near the front door and angled so that they are visible.  Unless you have pots of money and a desire to have a view of the door and all things around your home (from inside on your computer), why not get yourself a 'fake camera'?  The one pictured in this post is available at Amazon for under $30.00.  I don't know this brand but think like a thief - does it not look like a camera.  It also has a blinking light which will be noticeable and a deterrent.  Your peace of mind is worth $30.00.  There are a lot of 'cameras' available so shop around but remember, you WANT the camera to be visible.

Motion Sensor triggered lights.  You may already have a couple of motion sensor lights near your home.  If so, one of the benefits of having one near your front door is you will not have to dig for your keys in the dark.  The light will come on.  The other benefit is that the lights will come on whenever anyone is in the sensor range.  Try to find a place to put it where it cannot be easily broken.  Also, you might want to test the direction of the sensor and the level of sensitivity.  Our neighbours have one directed somewhere in their backyard and every time there is a breeze (ever so slight), the light comes on.  It is to the point that no one looks out or cares because it is always triggered.

Ladders and tools.  Do you have a shed with a ladder and some gardening and home tools?  Maybe you have your ladder sitting alongside your home.  Please make sure that your shed is locked and your ladders secured.  Getting hold of your ladder to climb in a second story window (remember, it would be odd to see a couple of young guys walking down the road carrying a ladder but not so obvious to have them climb YOUR ladder at the back of the house).

Neighbours.  The best way to be prepared is to know your neighbours and to keep an eye on their home as you hope they are keeping an eye on yours.    If there are odd people in your neighbourhood, stop and really take notice of them.  Don't take any risks but you might want to note license plate numbers.  From time to time we have odd people walking around our streets.  Most of the neighbours know to ask them if they need help or to take notice of them.  In some cases, it meant that they immediately took off.  Wonder what homes they were 'casing'?
