Down the Lazy River!  A Hot Weather Adventure in Harper's Ferry, WV

In a couple of months, it'll start to get nasty here in Washington, with the air getting so humid you can almost swim through it.  And as the hot and sticky summer days approach, and it's time to start finding relief, Harper's Ferry, WV is a great place to start.

At Harper's Ferry, Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland all come together, and the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers meet.

The town itself is charming and picturesque, with old historic buildings and homes that make you want to knock on their doors to see what's inside.  Well, some will actually let you in the door, as many are set up as museums.

But the cure for hot sticky summer days is down on the water, where there are rafts and tubes just everywhere!

If you're like me, looking to relax but not needing a lot of excitement, there is flat water tubing on the Shenandoah.  Flat river tubing is great if you will be out with small children, with four being the minimum age.  But if you are looking for something more exciting than my lazy river preference, there are class 1,2 and 3 rapids you can check out on the Shenandoah and the Potomac.

Don't own your own tube?  There are a number of organizations who rent tubes, and they also offer guided runs for the inexperienced. One is River Riders, which rents tubes, rafts and just about anything you'd need to stay safe on the water.  There's also The Adventure Center and River and Trail Outfitters.

Oh!  And please don't forget your sun block!  You might want to use the good stuff.

You can get to Harper's Ferry from both Washington and Baltimore in about an hour, making your tubing adventure a great day trip from the city.

If you are planning a move to or from the Washington, DC metropolitan area, I can help.  I am licensed in DC, Maryland and Virginia.   Please email me at Housepat@mac.com or call 202-549-5167.
