In Georgia, the state high school baseball playoffs are wrapping up. My kids went to Pope High in Cobb County, a real hotbed of baseball talent producing many college and professional players. My son played and my daughter was team manager, so our baseball roots run deep. It's never a matter of whether or not Cobb schools will be in the finals at different classes, but which ones will be there.
This year Pope is in the semifinals against Starr's Mill, another strong baseball program. I hadn't been to a high school game in awhile, so I decided to make the trek off the mountain for a double header. I also wanted to see the Pope field. When I was a booster, we started building a field. They had a "field" that consisted of a sprinkler system in a cow pasture with a backstop. We tore all that out and built a proper concession stand/press box/locker room, and graded the field properly, reinstalling new sprinklers. Now it looks like a professional park with all the subsequent changes!
Alas, my good intentions manifested themselves into bad luck. Pope got hammered in the first game. I decided to change their luck and came home, so they won the second game and will play for the top of their bracket tonight.
Good luck guys!
