Unemployment Rate in Austin Dips

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the unemployment rate in Austin took a slight dip for April 2013. Previously the jobless rate was 5.3%, and fell to 5.1% last month.  In April 2012, the rate was 5.6%.

Austin ranks below the national average for joblessness at 7.1%. Texas employers have added over 33,000 jobs in April and also over 326,000 jobs from the year before. According to TWC, the Lone Star State had experienced a growth rate of 3% from 2012 to 2013.

I hope this is a good sign going forward, however I remain a bit skeptical because these numbers may not reflect those folks that have stopped looking and those that are underemployed. But it maybe different in Texas, I know we lost of lot of Californians to TX because TX had more jobs.

Kathy, you have some great points. I do feel like Texas has not been hit in quite the same way as some other states, and we are very fortunate that our particular area has seen growth and been able to add jobs during this time. Of course there have been instances here where employees have lost jobs during the current economic times, but I also know of some that were able to find new employment relatively quickly compared to other regions of the country.
