A highlight of this year's Parade Of Homes in the Minneapolis and Saint Paul metropolitan area is the "Building Green" tour of homes and products.

The Spring '08 Parade of Homes booklet features a section on Building Green, including a Mini-Tour of fourteen Green Homes across the Twin Cities area.  Participating communities with Green Homes in the Parade include Otsego, Mound, Excelsior, Shakopee, Blaine, Minneapolis, Arden Hills, Vadnais Heights, Rosemount, Red Wing, Woodbury, Hudson and Stillwater.

Despite the fact that this year's Parade of Homes has 40% fewer participating homes, the Green Tour is a bright spot!  Prices for these Green Homes listed in the Parade roster range from $255,000 (for a home in the Red Wing community) to nearly three million dollars for a 5400 square foot home in Mound.

Energy efficiency is not the only factor that is stressed by the Green Star program, although Minnesota builders are proud of their standard, which Minnesota GreenStar Chair Mike Swanson describes as "a notch above EnergyStar".  Other criteria that are used to evaluate the worthiness of a home for consideration in the program include:

Resource Efficiency Use and Durability

Indoor Environmental Quality

Water Conservation

Site Management and Use

Participating Twin Cities builders admit there's a lot riding on this year's Parade of Homes.  With fewer homes on display (over half of which were sold prior to the event) and a challenging real estate market in the area, builders are hopeful that Building Green will help make the 2008 Parade a success.  The Parade runs from February 9 until March 16.

Eric - Great post!  Sounds like the twin cities are far ahead of many other metropolitan areas in going green.  Wish I could come to check this out.  It sounds like a wonderful twist on the tour of homes idea.  I hope many people will catch green fever and make some needed changes in their own homes as well.

Marlene, I think the participating builders and people who organized the Parade of Homes felt the need to come up with something appealing and different this year, especially given the state of the market.

Way ahead...I guess you could say that those of us in Southern California are "Green" with envy. (bah-dum-dum-crash!)

Good for Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Hey Joey, thanks for visiting!

I think we're going to see a bit of a race nationwide to raise the bar set by EnergyStar for energy consumption standards.

Eric, what is the Parade of Homes?  Who sponsors it?  Who shows up to it?  Tell us more.  Thanks!

Hey Eric...good stuff on your Parade of Homes! Was there any judging for the homes with the most points for over all performance in the 4 categories you posted?

Tim -- The Parade of Homes is a special five-week exhibition of new construction homes in the Twin Cities area, sponsored by the Builders' Association of the Twin Cities.  A supplement to the Minneapolis Star Tribune and to the Saint Paul Dispatch & Pioneer Press is a thick booklet which contains maps, directions and descriptions of the homes on display.  It's estimated that tens of thousands of people walk throuth Parade Homes every year.

It's basically a place for builders to showcase their work before the public, in a special time frame set aside for the purpose.  My understanding is that a lot of large cities host similar events.

Not everyone who tours the Parade is a serious buyer.  Some are folks who are looking for construction tips and remodeling ideas.  Others are just daydreaming a bit, even thought they are not in the market for a home at the moment.

Don, to my knowledge there is no judging of the Green Homes, but they are evaluated based on specific criteria (including energy efficiency, resource use, site prep and management) before they are included in the Parade.

Arizona just got it's first green subdivision- Shea Homes in Queen Creek. It's great to see this becoming a higher priority.

Chuck, glad to hear that.  Green construction, in both residential and commercial buildings, is a trend that is not going away.

Katrina -- As some states take the lead in tightening "green" standards, I'm pretty sure others will follow.
