San Diego Memorial Day Events 2013 To Honor The Fallen

"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died.  Rather we should thank God that such men lived."  General George Patton

Like so many other communities in the United States, people who live in San Diego are happy to celebrate the three day Memorial Day weekend with bar-b-ques and beach outings.  But, since we have such a huge military presence, over 100,000 active duty Navy and Marine personnel, Memorial Day is especially significant here.  San Diego has the largest concentration of military in the world!  To honor those that have given the ultimate sacrifice, we will have a few very special events on Memorial Day.

La Jolla Mount Soledad Veterans Memorial:

Every year,  there is a Memorial Day ceremony to honor the fallen on Mount Soledad.  This year will be even Mount Soledad la Jolla more poignant as two San Diego residents, Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods, both former Navy Seals and CIA Security Detail members, will be honored with plaques.  They are the two brave men killed saving people from the terrorist attack on our consulate in Benghazi, Libya, Sept. 11, 2012.

The keynote speech this year will be given by Navy Seal Captain Jason Ehret.  Music will be provided by the Navy Band Southwest Brass Quintet and the La Jolla Country Day School Madrigal Singers.  There will be a 21-gun salute and presentation of the colors by Marine Corps Recruit Depot Color Guard and Rifle Team.  The San Diego T-34 Performance Team will do a flyover in the Missing Man Formation.

The event will start at 2PM Memorial Day, 5/27/2013 and is free.  Parking can be challenging so there will be trolley pick-ups at Mt Soledad Presbyterian Church and the French-American School.  Both also located on Mount Soledad Road.

Coronado Memorial Day Services Star Park Circle:

The annual Memorial Day Service will be held May 27, 10AM at Star Park Circle.  This lovely ceremony has really grown in recent years.  Veterans of Foreign Wars, Coronado Post 2422, the Military Officers' Association of America Silver Strand Chapter and the U.S. Navy League Coronado Council sponsor the event.  Boy Scouts from the community will hand out small flags to children in attendance.

Guest of honor will be Retired Navy Rear Admiral Michael Giorgione.  Benediction will be by Navy Chaplain Lt. David Carlson.  There will be a presentation of the colors.  Perhaps the highlight of the ceremony will be Marine Sergeant Major John Clampitt reading the Memorial Day Order by General john Logan.  This explains what is thought to be the original Memorial Day, or Decoration Day, in 1866 Waterloo, New York.

Point Loma Fort Rosecrans

Fort Rosecrans is a beautiful, scenic location at the end of the Point Loma peninsula.  It is a crest and the views Fort Rosecrans Point Lomaare amazing.  Fort Rosecrans has been a registered historical site since 1932 and a military cemetery since the 1860s.  The Memorial Day service at Fort Rosecrans is the largest in the area.  This year is the 113th annual Memorial Day Service and Day of Remembrance on Fort Rosecrans.

The service will begin at 10AM on 5/27/13.  My advice is to go early because with just one road in and out parking will be a challenge.  Also, since this is the crest of the hilly peninsula, you should bring a jacket.  It does get breezy there.

This year's guest speaker is Rear Admiral Dixon Smith. Commander Navy Southwest.  Also speaking with be San Diego Mayor Bob Filner.  This is a lovely service, and there will be a lot of music and patriotic and inspirational speeches.

Wherever you are on Memorial Day, I hope you will join me (daughter of a career Air Force man) in remembering those brave people who wore their U.S. Military uniform proudly and paid the ultimate sacrifice in keeping the rest of us safe and free!
