Pasadena CA - Wash Those Reusable Grocery Shopping Bags

Wash Those Reusable Grocery Bags Pasadena CA

Reusable grocery shopping bags seem to be everywhere in Pasadena CA.    Afterall, if we forgot them at home or OH MY don’t have them(please don’t judge) -- we will need to cough up ten cents each for pleasure of once  again using(as in buying) a paper bag.  On July 1, 2012 Pasadena joined a small but growing group of California cities(including unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County like Altadena) where the plastic shopping bag has disappeared and the brown paper bag costs you ten cents each if you don’t bring your reusable grocery shopping bag.

But those reusable shopping bags -- my suggestion is to use cloth(I like the easier way when given a choice) -- need to be washed/cleaned on a regular basis.   Foodsafety.gov has shown the bags can become contaminated with E Coli or Salmonella from food or other items.

  • Cloth reusable bags should be washed in a washing machine using laundry detergent and dried in the dryer or air-dried.

  • Plastic-lined reusable bags should be scrubbed using hot water and soap and air-dried.

  • Check that both cloth and plastic-lined reusable bags are completely dry before storing them.

Reusable grocery shopping bags are part of our Pasadena life -- make sure you are keep some in your trunk and make sure they are clean.    Interested in Pasadena real estate or anywhere else in the San Gabriel Valley?   Give me a call at 818.516.4393 cell or drop a line to michaeljacobs@coldwellbanker.com.

Michael, great advice. This is a big "duh" moment for me. I have quite a few bags that I use for various things and really never thought to wash them. Cringing at what might be on them but, appreciate you enlightening me :)

Poeple don't understand the bacteria and germs that get into the reusable bags. Amazing how many more problems are caused by people trying to 'save us'.

Michael,

We just did that recently, here in Carpinteria, they don't even give you bags of any kind...I saw someone haul a whole load of groceries in their cart and then place each item in their car...She will not forget the bags next time. A

Amanda - with the near-elimination of paper bags in Pasadena area grocery stores, I found myself entering a grocery store for an emergency -- went to the back of my car and realized my cloth reusable bags were in the laundry basket waiting to be put into the washer.   I thought about some of the bags I've seen in the checkout line that look like dirty laundry --- ewwwww.   I'm glad to enlighten you -- now grab the detergent and head for the washer.   LOL.

Than - I've heard grocery bags are referred to as "gross-ery" bags in some circles.

Alexandra and Ron - that's definitely a lesson she'll likely not forget.

Hi Michael, we have gone the way of the reusable bags as well here, though not to your extent.  My family has been using them for a while and it is easy to forget to wash them, I know we have to get better at it, thanks for the reminder.

Hi Scott - there are so many things in life I can do better --- it's one thing at a time, one day at a time, one  more bag in the washer.....

Hi Michael, WE have a similar law in Austin and if you forget your bags it cost .25 cents per bag. I certainly need to wash my bags I hear they carry many forms of germs and I can't ever remember which ones I had meat products in. Sounds kinda of gross when you think about it.

Bob -- this is another case where we try to ignore the situation but it can be more than just gross but also harmful -- be careful, wash/clean your bags.

Michael - we are so far behnd here.  The merchants have pressured all to allow the plastic bage to still be handed out..   Not good...

Dagny - there was something circulating on the internet about plastic bags and how if utilized correctly can actually be quite useful for the environment.  Of course, things such as that always make me wonder -- who sponsored that study --- the Plastic Bag Association???  Just call me cynical.   Overall, I think there are some small changes we can make to help the environment.

I haven't purchased meat or fish since January, so I must have cut the bacteria risk down....However, I have owned the bags for years and never washed them.  I shall wash them today, thank you!

Michelle - a few months after the plastic bag ban went into the place, news stories and conversation started about the possibility of bacteria and germs spreading --- a rather yucky subject but necessary to know.

Michael,  I have seen some gross looking bags at the grocery store.  I feel sorry for the clerk who has to put the stuff in them.  Ewww.
