Death of an air conditioner...or 2.

For the last several years I have worried about my air conditioners. No, they are not out carousing in the neighborhood at night, but they are getting a bit fussy. You see, the two air conditioners at my home are just about 20 years old. They are original to the home. Air conditioners typically last 15 to 20 years in this area and then they need to be replaced.

Every Spring for the last two years these aging coolers have needed an infusion of Freon to get them up and running. Yesterday was no exception. I called the air conditioner doctor yesterday and he came out to the house for a visit. After checking over the patients, he advised me that he could make them relatively comfortable, but that the end was near for them both.

Air conditioners are rated in something called Seer's. The newer, more efficient models are rated from 13 up to 21. I hear that the regulations coming will require new units to meet the 16 SEER rating soon. I was advised that my units were probably around 6 SEER. This means a newer, better efficiency model will probably save 25-30% on my electric bill each month.

So, I made the gut wrenching decision to let my two trusted friends go. We will be having a service for them this Saturday. They have always been cool friends, but I will be welcoming two new friends this weekend that I hear are even cooler!

So if your air conditioning units are getting a bit long in the tooth, think about replacing them now before the Summer crush is upon us. I know it will be hard to say goodbye to old friends, but the savings in your power bills will help with the pain. Be cool!

Peter, there is one thing constant about homeownership... that is the maintenance homes must have to keep the values up as high as we hope to for them.  We all know what happens with there is so much deferred maintenance when placing a home on the market ... never a good thing!

Good morning Peter. I liked this and the analogy is apt.It is tough letting go and even tougher biting the bullet and spending for new. My two new friends are really efficient. Suggested.

We never like to lose an old friend do we Peter.  I know you will love the new efficient air conditioners and the money you will save might as well start this year as opposed to next.
