Our trip to Newport, Rhode Island - Part II

I shared our trip to Manhattan already, and am now putting together another album of Newport, Rhode Island.  I promised I would post photos of our trip, but since I took over 400, I've had to break these down into bite-sized pieces.

After leaving Manhattan, the ship sailed directly to Newport, Rhode Island. Since I've grown up in the west, this was an amazing trip. We were completely blown away by the beauty of the east. When we landed in Newport, I loved the colored houses, the red roofs, the little town, and the Newport Mansions. I was particularly interested to learn that most of them had been/are summer homes for the very wealthy. Names like the Vanderbuilts, and others were shared by the tour bus driver. Many of these homes are now on a tour and, I think, owned by the state?

According to Wikipedia: Newport is a city on Aquidneck Island in Newport County, Rhode Island, United States, about 30 miles (48 km) south of Providence. Known as a New England summer resort and for the famous Newport Mansions, it is the home of Naval Station Newport, housing the United States Naval War College, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, and a major United States Navy training center. The city is the seat of Newport County. Newport was known for being the "Summer White House" during the administration of President John F. Kennedy, and is the location of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Newport is an area fraught with history as can be seen by clicking on the link: Newport.  As we left Newport, there was this long, long bridge to James Town. People who live on these relatively small islands travel across these bridges and/or via ferry.  Maybe some of you from this area will be able to contribute some information, especially about that little restaurant in the middle of the bay.

We then headed for Bar Harbour, Maine which photos along with others from Quebec; Nova Scotia; Portland, Maine; and Boston I will share - hopefully soon. Enjoy!

Hi Teri,
Great photos and sounds like a marvelous trip.  Here I am on the East coast and I've never been to Newport.  That's a shame, I need to correct that.

Teri, wonderful photos.  I really want to visit Newport.  I just put in a timeshare exchange and hope to get an exchange there sometime this falls.  Your pictures just reinforced where I want to go.  They had some other places when I put in the exchange but I said there's plenty of time I'll wait.

Teri,

I love reading your blog.  You're witty, funny and enjoyable to read.  On the other hand, since you uploaded Snapshots, each page takes a painfully long time to load.  Same with Missy Caulk's blog.  Check it out to see what it's like from the outside looking in.

Cynthia, I was in Southern California for many years.....never made it to Catalina Island! Isn't that the way it is? When we live somewhere, we think we'll get around to it?

What do you think? I'll try and get in via another computer. Thanks for the head's up - and - thank you for the witty, etc. ;-)

Beautiful pics Teri, I hope you know I've become a fan of your photography. I've never been to Newport, RI but I do have some great memories of Newport Beach, CA from my 21st birthday.

Sarah, it's well worth the trip. I do think, however, that Olympia is beautiful as well. Just wet! ;-) I graduated from HS there.

Marti, well thank you very much (big smile) - I appreciate having a fan. Old memories - especially at the age of 21 - can be wonderful, can't they?

Teri,

Excellent photos of our beautiful Newport!! I'm glad you enjoyed your visit and hope you come back again. Newport has so much history.  Funny that you thought that was a "long" bridge!!!  One has to use it to get from the mainland, then to Jamestown, then on to Newport..Two separate bridges.

In fact, my Tallships blog had a photo of that bridge you took, in the background.

Not sure which restaurant you are referring to. Goat Island, perhaps.  Need to get Paul Silver here to set us straight.

Hi Karen, it looked like a long bridge.........;-)  There was that little "house" or "shop" or "restaurant" sitting out in the middle of the bay. It's in the photos on the tour. It's sitting on a rock in the bay. Let me know when you find out........

You mention your tall ships blog.....you need to provide me with a link. So? What is the mainland?

Teri~These photos are absolutely beautiful and the fact that you went to RI is fantastic. There are so many places I wish to travel to and this being one.

Julie, thank you so much. These photos were fun to take, but it was difficult to capture the true beauty of the area. I have yet to see more of the country - especially Alaska. That's my next trip - probably in 2009.

Teri, The mainland is what we call everything in Rhode Island that is not on an Island. We have Jamestown, Newport, Block Islands, Goat Island, Prudence Island, Hog Island, Patience Island, off the top of my head. The rest is connected to land...I still haven't found out about that restaurant, will probably be in the summer on my boat:)

So, Karen, do you think it is a restaurant? It is so cute out there! Thanks for the geography lesson. That was one of my favorite school subjects, and this area is fascinating to me. Let me know when you find out, please. It was difficult to tell about this area from a big boat. ;-)
