Hobart was shaking. At least that's what the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network tells us happened last Monday February 4 when a  series of 4 small 2.0 magnatude Earthquakes occurred. The quakes were centered in the Hobart area, a rural community located South of Issaquah Washington and East of Maple Valley, WA. Personally, I didn't feel a thing and don't know anyone in the area who did. These small tremors seem to be a common occurrence in the Pacific Northwest.

The only Earthquake of any magnatude I've experienced since moving to the Northwest in 1987 was seven years ago when the Nisqually Earthquake, a magnatude 6.8, had the whole Seattle area trembling. Being from the Mid-west, I was used to Tornado safety and called my 13 year old, who was at home sick and told him to hurry and get in the basement. Then I realized, wait, that's not what you're supposed to do! And I called him back to tell him to under a table! Fortuntately the only damage we sustained in our Maple Valley home was to a few picture frames and nick-nacks. But I know of a few homes and buildings in the area which sustaind significant structural damage. This is a photo of the runway at Sea Tac airport.

Colleen, Just thinking about earthquakes make me feel sick from my stomach. I was back in California when the big Northridge earthquake hit in 1994. I was ok but I lost everything I had, including my car. The entire building collapsed over the parking and my apartment window was landing on the street level...

That way I feel secure here in Vegas -:)

Love the PNSN link. As a life long resident I have been through the some good "shakers" going back to the early sixties. My first one (as a kid) I thought a flying saucer was landing!

Arina, I remember watching the world series during that Earthquake. It was awful and the aftermath of all those cars on the freeways and people unable to go home. How scary!! My son lives in the East Bay area these days and it makes me very nervous for him!

Kirk, I hope I never experience "the big one" they have been predicting. I could handle the shaking but when the "dip and loop" happened, UGH!

I don't care much for earthquakes but we have tornadoes and powerful electrical storms. However a couple of years ago I heard a helicopter landing on the house - all the windows were shaking, the lights were flickering - I didn't know what it was. My wife, being from Anchorage said from her sleep - Earthquake, small one .... EARTHQUAKE! I thought you told me you don't have earthquakes here! It wasn't that small. It hit 6.2 at the epicenter and it was about a 4 at our house.

oo- Where were you when the Nisqually Quake hit? I was on Olympia's Westside in the bread aisle of the Top Foods. Let me tell you, bread in shiny plastic bags can FLY! LOL

Oh Sarah, you were right in the heart of it! YIKES! I was in my office and thought a dump truck was getting ready to come through my window. I'll never forget it!

Well, if that's all you have to worry about now and again, then I would say your area is about one of the best communities to live in all of WA state, plus, it can get exciting too. What a wonderful selling point - Maple Valley Rocks!!!! Lance

We're going to have to put up with Mother Natures's idiosyncrasies no matter where we live.  Kathy is like a mule (keep reading before you pick up a bat :); she can tell we're having an earthquake looooong before I feel it.  She will start moving things off the counters, etc and then BAM, all of a sudden the house is shaking like crazy.  How she does it I will never know.

Colleen  Here in Northern Virginia we always get the tail end of storms along the coast, no really severe weather at all including earthquakes

Colleen, nice post. We had a 4.7 up in Red Bluff the other day. We don't get too many, although we are surrounded by volcanoes. We definitely have the potential. Hope all stays calm!

I was just talking to a client this weekend while showing cabins about an earthquake here a few years ago.  In North Georgia of all places!  But it's true, we had an earthquake.  I'm glad your earthquake wasn't too severe.  It's quite an experience.

Colleen, strong earthquakes must be very disorienting. The ground is your point of reference and when it moves your whole balance has got to be off. That's a pretty good crack there on the Sea-Tac runway. Reminds me of the cracks we get in our clay based soil during our hot summers that turn into droughts. You can pour water down them and it never fills up.

The Rim of Fire as it is called, the earthquake zone, is the western U.S. coast and the eastern Asian coasts.

Colleen - Mother Nature is one powerful gal.  As a 20 year resident of California, I actually like the small quakes--I prefer a little shaking to a whole lot of shaking.  The Northridge quake had us rocking and rolling in bedrock Palos Verdes!
