The One Thing Series-2 The One Thing You Can’t Take Away From Me Is…
(Second in a Series of Quotes relating to Jay Papsan & Gary Keller’s book, “The One Thing.”)
By Michelle Carr Crowe, top Cupertino real estate agent
“The one thing
you can’t take away from me is …
the way I choose to respond to what you do to me.
The last of one’s freedoms
is to choose one’s attitude in any given circumstance.”
Viktor Emil Frankl, M.D., Ph.D
One of the most influential thinkers of his time, Dr. Frankl published the famous book, “Man's Search for Meaning.”
First published in 1946 in German, the original title was “From Death-Camp to Existentialism.”
An Austrian neurologist and psychiatrist, Frankl first was a Holocaust survivor. Frankl developed and founded logotherapy, a form of Existential Analysis, that is considered the "Third Viennese School" of psychotherapy (besides Freud and Jung).
His book could be considered the exploration of an agonized soul’s cry, “Why is this happening to me?”
Man's Search for Meaning chronicles both Frankl’s experiences as a concentration camp inmate, and his psychotherapeutic method of finding meaning in all forms of existence, even the most tortured ones-yet always leads to the conclusion there are worthwhile reasons to continue living even when circumstances appear unbearable.
As people examine what “The One Thing” they need to do right now to most improve their lives and businesses, it’s important to start with the right mindset. An individual may feel manipulated, frustrated or overwhelmed by circumstances, yet, as Dr. Frankl said,
“The one thing you can’t take away from me is …
the way I choose to respond to what you do to me.
The last of one’s freedoms is to choose one’s attitude in any given circumstance.”
