Realtors Follow That Gut Feeling... It Could Save Your Life!

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with South Florida Real Estate & Development, Inc. BK3027955

On February 2, 2008 a fellow realtor and Re/Max agent in  Canada was killed answering a call to show property.

Canadian police have confirmed Tuesday that 24-year-old real estate agent Lindsay Buziak was stabbed while showing property on a vacant $964,900 house.

Rumours circulating in the real estate industry say Buziak was lured to the house, through a phone call on Saturday from a woman with a strong Spanish accent who asked to see properties in the $1-million price range. She allegedly told Buziak she intended to buy that day. Later, Buziak reportedly received a phone call from a man who said he alone would meet with her.

Buziak told friends in her Re/Max Camosun office that she was uncomfortable about the appointment.

She reportedly asked her live-in boyfriend, fellow real estate agent Jason Zailo, to meet her later at the house.

A Saanich detective and a forensic identification officer were present at a forensic autopsy performed Tuesday in Vancouver as officers try to determine how and why Buziak was killed Saturday in a vacant home listed for sale on De Sousa Place in Gordon Head. Results of that autopsy should be released Wednesday.

The agent said to others that she felt uncomfortable about the appointment.

Please follow your "gut" feelings when you are meeting new people and potential buyers and sellers.

If a buyer calls you, please have them visit your office first, to meet the first, and get a copy of their driver's license, and give it to your broker, before you put them in your car.

Also, better yet, have them speak to a loan officer about pre-approval, before you get them in your car and drive out there and they cannot even afford the place.

This is common sense, but I feel it needs to be said because of this recent tragic event.

This girl was a beautiful 24 year realtor, probably so excited about a ptential sale of $964,900.

Let's all mourn the loss of this beautiful young lady who tried to do what we all have to make it in this business. She made a mistake that cost her, her life.

May this post save lives today, this is to all my realtor friends in Active Rain. God Bless.

Nicholas,

You are so right on this. All too often it's just to darn easy for us to become targets.

Lynda: I think more and more we are becoming targets because we are on call, and meet strange people all the time, we have to qualify them.

These are scary but reality for us realtors.  May you never experience that, and hope that those who do, will be healed quickly, and come to full recovery.  I appreciate your blog, and the caution we must take.  God Bless your efforts.  Lu

Nicholas- What could possibly be the motive for this. Was it a sexual assault? Realtors don't carry large sums of money. I just can't understand the senselessness of this crime. We posted the press release of this crime to all of our agents and reminded them to be careful.

Besides going with your gut, never let your guard down.  When in doubt, make sure that you either have a safety buddy or at least have a plan.  If I don't feel good when at the property, I have no problem of saying "oops" can't get the key out of the lock box.

What a sad reminder of how careful we must be at all times.  Very tragic for the young woman, her family, friends and co-workers.

When you think of the chances that we take, it is scary.   We sit open houses at vacant houses, we meet strange men, even pick them up sometimes.   All the things your Mom always told you not to do.

This sad story should remind everyone to be careful and not so trusting.  This means men as well as women.

Nicholas - a tragic story but a cautionary tale.  I hope that your sharing this information will mean that others will be saved.  It is a sad commentary on the world we live in.

Our industry attracts a high percentage of female agents who need to be alert and careful about the situations they enter.  But men can be placed in compromising positions as well.

Thank you for the strategies you purpose.  I hope others will add to the discussion in comments or posts.

This topic saves lives.  Let's be careful out there.

Mark: There is no motive then pure savagry, and the idea that realtors carry alot of money on them. I don't know if this is a rape victim, I can only imagine. The details are forthcoming. This is a shame, and we need to make realtors aware of the dangers out there, Thanks.

Judi: We can never let our guard down, we have to be diligent, and know that we live in dangerous times.

Deborah: Very tragic for all realtors, I am devasted, I feel like I lost a family member, she was only 24 yrs old.

Julie: They need our prayers, she was a lovely young lady with her whole life ahead of her.

Pat: We take alot of chances, and it only takes one mistake.

Latonia: God also gives us a mind and choices, we must take care of the things we know to do, and God will take care of the things we don't. Thanks and stay safe.

Hugh: We live in perilous times, be diligent ny brother, keep safety a primary goal.

Ted: Cautionary inded, I posted this to save lives of realtors whose families need them home safe and sound each day. I hope there will be more comments posted which provide safety for realtors. Especially, female realtors who are so brave and enthusiastic to sell, they must take safety measures.

May all realtors read this post, I pray, and be safe.

Yes, I wrote a safety blog last week pertaining to the Vancouver death, A man was luring agents here in Washington to vacant homes, Our association of realtors has a copy of the sherrif report that could be forwarded on.

The man of interest is Christopher Heath, He is believed to be dangerous and in route from N.Y to Washington again, His dirvers license is from Florida. He may be linked to the Emmert murder here in Washington a year or 2 ago, but the investigation is coninuing, he is being sought.

1. Set up a safety plan with your office and broker,

2. Make sure when are contacted that there is a confirmation that you can re contact back...

3. Also make it clear that you have a system, and let potential buyers know this with follow up calls from other agents, friend, family while you are on your appoinment...

4. Better yet us a buddy system.....

Be safe out there.

Sheryl: Good safety points to go by. Brokers should follow office rules when it comes to agents showing buyers property, when first meeting them. Safety first. Buddy system is good, but a copy of driver's license with picture is better. Someone would think twice when the broker has evidence at the office.
