Glen Echo Park's history goes back to 1891 when it started out as the National Chautauqua Assembly a school for science, arts, language and literature. In the beginning of the 1900s it became a major amusement park with a huge swimming pool. The city dwellers would take the trolley out to the "country" to spend the day. I know that from friends who have come to the park with their families in those days.
In the 70s the Park services took over Glen Echo and managed it ever since with the Glen Echo Park Partnership for the Arts and Culture on behalf of Montgomery County.
At the park one can attend a variety of art classes. Mydaughter and I took ceramic classes years ago at Glen Echo. There is a huge ballroom where the regulars come to participate in ballroom dancing. Of course, there is still the famous carousel that is symbolic of the Glen Echo Park. As you can see, there is lots to do at Glen Echo Park. To all that I would add also the beautiful, scenic view of the Potomac from the Park and the near-by bike trail along MacArthur Boulevard.
This is trully a nice place for locals and tourists to visit and get involved. Enjoy a great summer!
