Toastmasters, Speech Contest Winner, Charlie Wilson Speaks in Erie, PA
and
Meadville, PA
Every year, Toastmasters International holds a competition for the World Championship of Public Speaking. Between 30,000 and 35,000 members begin competing in February at the Club Level. The winners there go on to the Area Level and the winners there go on to the Division Level and those winners compete at the District Level. There are 90 Toastmasters Districts around the world with District 13 covering Western Pennsylvania. The 90 District winners will compete in semifinal contests to become one of nine final speakers in the WorldChampionship in Cincinnati.
The winner of District 13's contest is Charlie Wilson from State College. He has been a Toastmaster for almost 25 years and has reached Toastmasters’ highest achievement recognition of Distinguished Toastmaster twice. He has also served as District 13's Governor twice.
Charlie is also active in community theater, acting in 84 productions. He recently finished playing a corrupt Senator in ‘Born Yesterday’ and at the end of July he will playing the husband of the first woman accused of being a witch in ‘Crucible.’
Charlie’s next contest level will be the semifinals in Cincinnati in August. Should he win that contest he will compete two days later with a different speech in the World Championship. Charlie made it to the semifinals in 2008, winning there to become a Finalist in Calgary, Canada.
Charlie is an emeritus retiree from the faculty of Penn State. He is married to Carolyn and has two sons, Dave and Doug. These three are the inspirations behind the speeches he will be using at the semifinals and the finals.
Charlie’s speech title is ‘One Day, Every Day’ and he will be practicing and refining it at as many clubs as possible before the semifinals. Please come to help him with his speech at the following Toastmasters meetings.
