My Two Daughters

I love the fact that I am able to spend so much time with my kids.  Since I work from home most days, I get to see them far more often than most of my friends do.  Our toddler is changing quickly from a baby to a little girl, and my six-year old will soon be seven.

Recently, our toddler Abby has discovered a method to get what she wants that is very effective

She will ask to be picked up, usually by saying, "Pick up my Abby."

When you pick her up, she will cradle your face in her little hands and say, "Do you want candy?" while smiling.

The first natural response for any normal human is, "No, do YOU want some candy?"

"YES!!!!!" she will exclaim gleefully, of course while still cuddling on you.

By then, you are trapped into providing said candy.

The other wonderful new saying that she has developed is a simple "OW!"  She utters this whenever you are doing anything that she doesn't really want you to do, such as wiping her face or restraining her from going into the street or just picking her up if you are trying to leave the grocery store.  She learned this one from her older sister Aleah, because Abby likes to sit on Aleah, or pull her hair, or grab her glasses off of her face.  She has heard it enough times now that she figures this is simply what one says when you are touching them and they don't want to be touched right then.

You can imagine the looks that this one gets us when we are in public, as it probably appears as though we are hurting our beautiful little girl unnecessarily.

"Come here, Abby.  It's time to go (picking her up)."

"OW Daddy OW!  OW!     OW!     OW!"

I have never felt so guilty for doing nothing in my whole life.  The first time it happened, I was holding her upside down, which made me think I had honestly hurt her somehow.  We rather quickly determined that she is not injured in any way, especially since she never cries while saying it.

For a six-year old child, Aleah appears to be an incredible speller and she has an awesome memory for letters and names.  She clearly inherited our spelling bee gene.  My wife went to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC when she was in middle school, whereas I only came in third in our district (the top two went to the citywide competition).  My achilles heel was the word "rambunctious".  I still remember the heat of tears on my face when I lost.

At any rate, the other day Aleah asked me to help her login to one of her online computer games.  She knew the password and username, but needed help with the underscore on the keyboard.  It surprised me a little that her password contained an underscore, but I was even more surprised when I realized that it had THREE underscores.  It was something like, "g_ingittle_hzx_r".  I kid you not.

It made me realize that my children will far surpass me in computer knowledge in the next several years, as I am moving at a dinosaur's pace and they are lightning-quick.  When Aleah casually used the word "avatar" at dinner the other day, I knew that I was officially getting old.

Thanks for your time reading this one!

Jason, I love reading your stories about your children.  Both my "babies" are grown and gone, and you bring a little bit of a chuckle to me with each one of your real life stories.  Different generations - same cuteness!

It would appear that nobody need worry about the time we married folks spend on AR, eh, Jason?  Anybody paying attention clearly sees the time and love you spend on that family of yours.  Your girls do sound incredibly bright.  Then again, this is no terrible surprise.  Thanks for opening your house up yet again for another peek at the Crouch's.

I hear you Jason on the computer skills, my kids are a little older than yours, but we are inserting tables, inserting symbols (the latest I saw was the degrees sign for the temp) changing fonts, and wanting to know how to design a web page.  That is something I will not be able to teach them, but my wife may be able to get by.  They will surpass me quickly as well - which is a lesson in itself.

Jason:  My little granddaughter speaks the same language as your Abby.  My five year old grandson finds the computer so intuitive, it's frightening.  It reminds me of a favorite song of mine -

I see leaves of green, red roses too
I see them bloom for me and you
And I say to myself, what a wonderful world ...

I hear babies crying, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll ever know...

I'm so glad to see a father speak so lovingly about his children and happy for you that you can spend more time with them.  Fathers have always missed out for the most part.

Great story about your little girls, my son is the same way he is using words at the dinner table that whenb he say's them I have to ask him to place it in a sentence so I can figure out what he just said.

Ow!  Reminds me of when my daughter was a toddler and I had to go around and make sure all the windows were closed before I put her in the bath.  As soon as I touched her hair, she would start screaming.  She wasn't hurt, just did NOT want her hair washed.  I didn't need the neighbors wondering if we were hurting her!

Don't worry, so far so good on the teen years for us!  ::knocking wood -- a lot::

Cute, cute, cute!  Abby is adorable.  Now, Aleah, what a brainy girl!  I never think to include _'s in my passwords.   Your children are so lucky to see you, even from a distance, every day as they are homeschooled.

Kids rule, eh Jason? I love how they try out little tricks and emotions to see how they effect us or if they can get what they want.

Your comment about the 'hot tears' and spelling bee brought back an awful memory for me. I had done really well in the 3rd grade, beating out a 5th grader with the word "hollandaise". Then, in the fourth grade, I was eliminated in the first round by making a mistaken utterence of the letter 'A'. I actually looked at the judges and asked "Are you going to count that?" "Please finish the word." So I spelled the word correctly...then that bell rang. Aaaaaah...still hurts the old pride.

Jason,

Kids are a lot smarter than we give them credit.  When my kids were growing up and I was "learning" the computer, whenever I wasn't sure what to do, I called upon either my daughter or son (whoever happened to be home at the time) to help me out.  I have to give them credit.  They taught me a lot about computers.

WOW, How the heck to remember passwords that weird? I can barely remember my odd ball ones that make complete sense being a combination of words and numbers. But, underscores, what is wrong with that! Congrats on having a speller in your family, this is pretty cool and hope she makes it to DC like your wife did! AH - I love home school kids, ever notice a lot of the spelling bee champs are home school kids?
