Speechless Sunday-A blast from the past

I saw this toilet while touring a historic site and it was such a blast from the past.  The tank was overhead with that long chain.  I vaguely remember one incident when the tank overflowed.

Now I am wondering when this model was last popular and why was the tank overhead in the first place?

Toilet with overhead tank and chain

You never know what will turn out to be a blast from the past.

Wow, we had those in Germany when I was a little girl. And it was scary for a kid to have all that water rushing down.

Jennifer, that tank was intended to be not only for a good flush, but also for a quick shower when least expected. ;-)

Jennifer, I have never seen one of these gravity tanks in person so it is worth a picture!  We have come a long way since then!

Jennifer, I have never seen a toilet like this, and we have some turn of the century homes downtown.    It would be fun to see one in person, thanks for sharing.

Jennifer, Love the style of that toilet but not sure if I'd want one in my home. Perhaps the water tank was above to create momentum when flushing? Just a guess!

Jennifer, how interesting.  I hadn't seen one of these in years.  I hope someone stops by to tell us how they worked.  I get the basic gravity idea, but how about getting the water UP there to begin with.

Jennifer the intent of having the tank overhead is obvious, the intent was to take care of #2 and shower at the same time.  That is what I call great time management :) :) :)

Hi Jennifer, thanks for the sweet memory of home in Malaysia. The only different is the color of the tank.

Thanks for sharing your photograph. The only place that I have seen these commodes in in historic homes. As I recall, the designer was Mr. Crapper.

Jennifer, I have seen them in turn of century properties. Yes, I heard of Mr. Crapper. Not sure if he is real or not. Obviously they had good reason to design toilet like this. Not sure I agree.

Jennifer, there was a Mr. Crapper and the sole purpose was to make sure there was enough water pressure coming through to clean out the lower portion. Some early model cars fed gas to the engines that same way before the invention of the fuel pump. On cars, however, it was not uncommon for a car that was low on gas to have to go up a hill backwards so that the gas would feed the engine

Jennifer, I see these in historic homes though I never remember seeing them in any homes as a child. They work on the principle of gravity.

Jennifer now I am aging my self I remember those Toilets, does that make me a museum peace?:)) I think it was to get more pressure having the water come from higher to low:))

Thanks everyone for all the comments.  Roy and Ed are correct it was invented by Mr, Crapper and has to do with gravity and better water pressure for that time period :)  Hoping soon I will be able to spend more time  responding to comments.

Have a great week.
