Great post Mike, we always tell applicants that we are not looking for "employees", if they want to act like a partner then they will have a future here, if not then go work for the government.

Today, I received a great reminder of the difference between the entreprenuer who creates a business and jobs and the person who collects a paycheck.  I spent most of my morning taking care of business at my office, and then I was out showing property throughout the afternoon.

In the late afternoon, 5:30 pm, I had to meet up with an electrician who works for our company.  We were asked to take care of an electrical issue at another business.  This electrical repair covers two different businesses that are open all 8-5.  It would be near impossible to do anything during business hours. So, any repairs would need to be done before or after hours.  That means someone from both companies would need to come in early or stay behind to allow us access to their electrical system.

My electrician was an hour into the repair when I arrived.  We went over the findings he had made, and then together, we started to extend his discoveries.  Fifteen minutes into my time there, one of the employees from company A came by to let me know he was tired of waiting for us to fix the electrical problem.  It was actually his problem.  He was only an hour overtime which he was being paid time and a half.

Then, a Company B employee came by and let us know she was done waiting.  She waited 15 minutes.  At least Company A waited for 1 hour.  The Company A guy said, "Hey, I've got a life.  I want to go home."  I found that funny.  I own two companies, and ironically, I have a life too.  I didn't want to be at his place of business after hours either.  But, every once in a while, a project demands more of us than a typical day would require.  What do we do?

In our case, we meet the need.  Why?  We're in business to succeed not just to collect a paycheck.  We also know that other entrepreuners are also in business to make a profit.  We're here to help them do that.  The difference between the employer and the employee can be as simple as who is willing to put themselves out to make a difference.  Sadly, that employee's indifference to his employer will cost his employer a lot more.
