Twinkies Return! Back on Store Shelves in July. Ho Hos and Ding Dongs, Too!

Junk Food Junkies of the World, rejoice!  Twinkies, the iconic snack food with a shelf life of 200 years, returns to grocery stores in July.  The Twinkies Plant in Emporia Kansas is back in business after a $410 Million purchase of the Twinkies Brand from the bankrupt former owner.

The new owners are Apollo Global Management and Metropoulos & Company, which owns Pabst Blue Ribbon and Vlasic pickles.  (Twinkies, PBR, and Vlasic Pickles?  That sounds like a great snack!)

Twinkies - Hostess Sells Twinkies per DealBook

The indefatigable Twinkie has survived Wars, Recessions, the South Beach Diet, and an Army of 18,000 Union Members.  Twinkies were down for a time, but never out!

In related news, the Secondary Market for Twinkies has collapsed.  Merchants who stockpiled Twinkies before the Hostess Crash were getting $6 to $11 per Twinkie on eBay and other venues.  That Market is now toast (more appropriately, "burnt rubber", as those who have ever toasted a Twinkie can attest).  It appears that the Twinkie Resellers will have to eat their loss.

Fred, I was talking wit a friend at dinner last night and he had bought the last box of Twinkies on the shelf in Germany when they announced the closure. He held onto them and when they announced the buyout he made a big cup of coffee and ate the whole box at one sitting. Now he can have more next month.

Twinkies were never my kind of snack.... but I could really use a Ding Dong right now.

Good morning Fred - while I haven't had a Twinkie in decades, knowing I COULDN'T have one was horrible! Glad to know that generations to come will be able to snack like we did :)

Fred,

I love the secondary market comment. What happened to the futures and options market for Twinkies?

I'm glad to hear that my grandkids will be able to enjoy a Twinkie with a glass of milk when they return from school in the afternoon.

Fred, I bet all the people that paid insane prices on ebay to get the last boxes are kicking themselves! It's good to hear they're back, it's rare I eat one but, the thought of them being gone forever was a little sad.
