Fundraising Suggestions

By
Real Estate Agent with Real Estate

In the real estate business we certainly do our share of prospecting to earn a living. We also tend to have a very supportive and giving nature so when people ask for help we lend assistance. Since I began running a few years ago my name has hit the list of supporters for most of the charity runs in my area. Typically a 5k draws hundreds of runners each paying their entry fee to support whatever charity is sponsoring the event.

Each season the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society sends me a recruitment flyer to learn more about their Team in Training and this year I decided to attend the informational session. Since I was planning to run the Fairfield Half Marathon again I thought it would be nice to run with a group and help raise money for the society. When I learned that the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in Sand Diego was the biggest fundraiser for blood cancer I decided to go for the big one - 26.2 Miles.

In addition to four months of endurance training I am responsible for raising money for the society to remain on the team. My first mailing of 300 letters had a donation rate of about 10% so I need to come up with more fundraising ideas.

Since I have only supported others and never been the organizer of a fundraiser I'm not sure what works best. I have about 3-1/2 months to raise the money but only about a month and a half before I need to personally guarantee the funds with my credit card. My target is to have most of the funds donated by April 1, 2008. In the meantime I will continue to market my SOI with plans of bringing that donation rate up closer to 50%. Lets hope I don't need to get physical and put out my own fundraising video..... But I do have some stock photos...! LOL

So... Enlighten me with suggestions... The more details the better, I am clueless about regulations that cover things like raffles, car washes, bake sales and all that stuff. If you don't have any good ideas you could always toss in a few bucks...

Dan.... I could both give a suggestion and some of Bob Stewart's money.  lol  Seriously though, I would glad to donate and I can promise money, as I mentioned, the first week of March. As in regards to some suggestions?  How about a 2 hour trip to the go-go bar?  For a certain price to include drinks... and also have the owner chip in 10% and the girls to chip in also.  ;o)

Anything else?  I'll have to think about it....  if this had been brought up a few months ago, a ski trip would have been good. You guys could do a local ski trip?  How old are your kids?  Getting a youth group involved always helps. And possibly doing a ski trip through them to raise money?

Jeff... Don't tell me your on the AR payroll now!  At least you're not too Clickie for me!  LOL    I have thought about elaborate ideas like approaching the PTA and the school to see if a "pasta" dinner a few nights before their 5k race could be done to raise money but decided that would be like horning in on their event.  The simpler the better..... the Leukemia Society has a fundraising workshop tomorrow night so maybe they'll have something of substance to say.  Guess I'm really looking for way to turn up the pressure on my SOI for a small contribution.  My first batch of letters asked my SOI for $25 donations and since my bigger ticket friends and family donated already I only need about 140 contributors.

Sandra... I'd lose money at the Go-Go Bar with Jeff's appetite for Martini's... Plus I don't think I've ever been in a go-go bar.  Originally I was thinking get physical as in jokingly strong arming people for donations.  When I search for a graphic to use the video was pretty funny..

Fund raising is not an easy task.  I run a golf outing for Children's Miracle Network every year and the prizes and auction items can suck the life out of you.

I would recommend a more personal approach.    Have a dinner at your home inviting couples to bring a dish and a gift you can use to auction off.

Andrew.... Thanks... The thought of sponsored miles did cross my mind but I need more information from the Leukemia Society before fine tuning it.  We do wear a Team in Training shirt for the race and I think they have parameters based on donation size as to who qualifies to have their name recognized.   The training blog is underway and I do have an Honored Teammate "Olivia" who is 10 years old but I didn't want to post anything until after meeting the family...  When I jump into a project I move fast and the pace of the society is a little slow so far. Their "tips" concentrate on hitting $1500 in donations within six weeks and I'm their at three.  The time commitment is huge and I'm trying to get it done before the busy spring market.

Dez... I'll work on the personal approach....  I always do well with the business systems method and as you can tell my first thought was strong arm tactics ( jokingly of course ) but the touchy feely tug on emotions has never been my strong point... I'm learning to be a sweet talker.. LOL

Dan my fundraising experience has been mainly with kid type of events, but I would think that you could do a walk-a-thon at a local running track, and challenge all the William Raveis Realtors in the State to participate, you could even open it up to other Real Estate Companies as well.

Sandra... Notice when I use any stupid tags they are visible along the right side of his page for all posts.  Why don't you tell me how come other people don't have this problem.

George... Whenever my kids had fundraiser for their school or sporting events I just bought the whole lot.  Back in the day eating $50 or so worth or candy bars was easy.   Have you ever tried squeezing a few bucks out of a Realtor?   When I came into this business I was amazed at how tight they are... most won't even spend money for basic business supplies.  I have posted my donation information in the office since I have supported many breast cancer or school fundraisers over the years.  Even given the coat off my back to the clothing drive for homeless since larger mens coats are always the most sought after..... A few have said they were donating but I haven't seen a penny yet.  Maybe I shouldn't generalize.... There are many generous agents and my biggest donation came from an AR agent.

Morning Dan! I'm sure you've already thought of this...but just in case...   Have you contacted the newspaper?  Have them come out and do a public interest story about what your goals are....how much you need to raise...where to donate...etc.  Sorry if you've already done this...it's the best I can do on my first cup of coffee!

I think what you're doing is wonderful!  Best of luck!

Judy... I'll browse through my collection of running photos and find something appropriate.... Does the slide show have good striptease music for my dance moves?   LOL

Mana...Could anything you suggest shock me?

Barb...  The newspapers did move fast.... Within a week this Press Release was published and just last week another one of the local papers gave me some press...

Lindsey.... I'll save begging until I get desperate...  Donations are trickling in and I still have time for my standard marketing to work.  As far as the office goes I know from experience not to waste my time... The manager is so tight it isn't funny.  Actually I won't even get involved with any of the local stuff done as "an office" because there is no support and agents are left to fund it themselves or look foolish.  Of course the company takes all the credit and tries to bask in the limelight.

Ginger... I rate picking up the phone in this case about even with high pressure sales.... Hoping I'll just run into people and bring it up in person over the next few months...

Janie... You did say the normal progression is the big race... Looking forward to the challenge.
