Restaurant "to go" boxes

When most people go out to dinner, they order their drinks, and an appetizer.  Then they wait, and eventually, order their main courses.  Out come the soups and/or salads before the main meal… then (even though they’re already mostly full!) out come the entrees!  Maybe they order desert, and/or after dinner drinks. When they are done, they usually have some leftovers.  The portions that restaurants typically serve are HUGE, and (I believe) are a large contributor to this country’s problem with obesity!

So here they are, with half their entrée still sitting on their plate, and they just can’t finish it.  They don’t want to just waste it, so they ask for a “to go” container, which is usually made out of Styrofoam, plastic, or some other material (usually not recycled) that they will end up throwing in the trash to rot in the landfills!

Here are just a couple ideas to lower your impact when you eat out:  1) Bring a washable Tupperware container to dinner WITH you if you plan to take leftovers home with you! This way you can enjoy them as tomorrow’s lunch, and not add anything extra to our landfills!  2) consider sharing an entrée, or ask for a half-portion.  Many restaurants will accommodate, and you won’t feel so stuffed later!  Your waistline will thank you later too!

As always, Please feel free to comment if you have questions, or anything to add!

I like sharing the entree, but I admit sometimes you get a look from the waiter. Having worked as a certified food service manager, I always thought it odd that we had to overstuff a plate to make people feel like they were getting there money's worth. However, we consumers have gotten use to these proportions.

Tupperware - great idea!  And it'll even fit into (most) of our purses...  And then when we go to reheat, we don't have to worry about the styrofoam or plastic melting.

Boy, I wish our entire country [culture] would just learn to eat adeqate size portions, period.  I sure do like leftover sushi, though. :)

Hi Jonelle,  my husband and I often share our plates.  Waiters hate it...but we make up for it. :) We are both not big eaters and hate waste... Great ideas!

Janelle, I love the idea of taking my own container!  Why didn't I think of that?  However I do recycle my carry outs, and go so far as to take home any plastic plates on which the food is served, and either recycle or reuse.  I embarass my husband to death when I walk out with all our plastic food stuffs :-)

Janelle, we share our meals too.  The servings are so big anyways.  The tupperware is a really good idea.

Hi Jonelle! I am guilty!!! LOL! I many times have a server ask me if my meal is alright because it comes after all the appetizers and salads...and I am just too durn full! Portion sizes in America are just too darn large and so are we because of it! (although you don't look like it from your photo!)

Like momma always said, "My eyes are bigger than my stomach!"

Great post!
