Big, Mean, Nasty Termites: At Least They Are Not In Your House

As a home inspector, who also teaches a class in wood destroying organisms through the state college system in Washington State, I always take a camera along with me on hikes or vacations. I have some cool, and very illustrative, photos that I have taken of all kinds of wood problems, like classic cubical brown rot on wood in the famous city of Pompeii or wood that is in good shape and nearly 1000 years old from Bologna. However, I think that the one time I was really happy to have my camera was in the Yucatan of Mexico a few years back. This is a photo I took of a subterranean termite mound/nest in a park. While you are checking out the photo, you might also want to check out my favorite termite song. As the title of the blog says, just be glad they are not inside the walls of your house.

That's amazing.

I remember seeing a show on Discovery about termites in some desert.  They built a "tower" of dirt/sand/mud up from the ground about 5 feet high and it blocks the sun and lowers the ground temperature on the other side of it by quite a few degrees and keeps them cooler under ground.  I admire their work ethic that's for sure.

Yikes! Like you said. At least they're not in someone's house.

Termites in Africa and Australia can be amazing, those big high towers you talk about.

I enjoy Mexico but I noticed lots of pest control operators. No wonder.
