WHAT'S BEHIND THE RED DOOR?

Jill Sackler, NYS RE Agent, SRES

As I drive through my neighborhood, I can't help but notice the many homes I pass with their door painted red and I find them all very attractive and welcoming.

Instinct tells me and research confirms that Feng Shui has played an integral part in the color choice.

In this discipline, the front door is considered the "mouth of chi." Important life sustaining energy (which is generally understood to include people, money and opportunities) pass through this opening.

In Feng Shui, there is an optimal front door color based on the direction the house is facing. Red is the perfect color for homes facing South (as depicted in all 3 photos.)

Jill, My daughter likes red front doors and has had 3. I don't know what exposure the houses had but I kind of figure that it really didn't matter. I have one client that painted her front door yellow. I wonder what that means.

Each home that we flip has special emphasis placed on the front door. Color is always important as it send the message that you want to convey.

Debbie - I also have a client with a door painted a sunny yellow. According to this source, homes facing the NE, SW, N, or NW directions can all benefit from a yellow door.

Gary, as you know, we have a Feng Shui expert on AR, it's not my expertise.  I just find the red door very visually appealing.

Joe - Absolutely! I'm amazed that you've given this much thought to flip houses. That's wonderful. It does convey a message.

Hi Jill, We painted my previous home's door a nice tomato red..loved it. My current home has these gorgeous mahogony wood doors that would just be a sin to paint over. I never knew a door colors were part of fen shui...who knew? All of those homes in your pictures are very inviting!

Donna - I really do too. Most of these homeowners probably just like the color and don't realize why they're attracted to it.
