Mike Ferry - "Who's The Boss?"

I ask people every day why they pick Real Estate as a career. The three most common answers I get are … “I want to be my own boss” … “I want more freedom in my life” … “I want to have my own schedule, not somebody else’s.” I hear these every day and, believe me when I tell you, these are three of the biggest reasons why Real Estate people fail. If your goal is to succeed, which I believe it is, and our goal is to assist you in that process … you have to knock those three thoughts right out of your head immediately.

People say to me all the time, “I want FREEDOM,” to which I say, “Freedom from what … income?”

The majority of people don’t really have the skill set required to be their own boss, and enjoy the freedom that comes with being your own boss. Do you understand the real meaning of being your own boss? Do you understand that being your own boss means you have to accept a lot of responsibilities (something you don’t have … when you have the good fortune of working for somebody else who is the boss)?

Let’s take, for example, the responsibilities of being a good listing agent … which means you’re your own boss. Are you really accepting the responsibility of pricing … doing what it takes to get it sold … presenting offers in a timely manner … communicating with the seller every week … these are basic responsibilities that go to a person that wants to be their own boss.

I support and cheer for everybody that wants to be the boss, but most people have a hard time really managing themselves in a highly productive manner, therefore, they’re not able to be as productive as they want to be when they are their own boss.

If you want to be your own boss, you have to set a very strict schedule that will lead you to the production goals that you’ve set. That means, of course, that a good boss has strong production goals that are meaningful and important and a strong boss is willing to do what it takes to achieve those goals.

A strong boss follows the schedule and does the activities that create production, because the boss has a reasonability of creating production. Are you really going to prospect every day … are you really going to be strong in your lead follow up and prequalifying … are you really going to make a strong presentation to the seller? Because the seller is looking for a leader … they’re looking for a boss … somebody to tell them what has to be done. As you can see, there may be a little bit more to this whole process than meets the eye.

If you want to be your own boss and be a productive one, give these ideas some thought.

Very powerful Mike. Thank you so much for sharing. Those are the reasons I got in to real estate more than 8 years ago, and I'm not sure I'm a good boss. I need to make some changes and improvements.

I have Five bosses at home. A wife and four daughters. They demand that I take them to the movies today, which will cost over 100 dollars. Hence, I better sell some real estate!
