25 Ways to Show your Professional Courtesy Every Day

Real estate is a reputation and service business. Support your reputation by showing respect for the public, the properties you show, and your fellow REALTORS®

The following are 25 ways to show your professional courtesy every day

 Respect for the Public

 1.   Always follow the Golden Rule – do to others as you would have them do to you.

2.   Respond promptly to inquiries and requests.

3.  Schedule appointments and property showings in advance. Call if you are delayed or cancel an appointment.

4.  When showing an occupied home, always ring the doorbell or knock first. If there is no answer, announce yourself loudly before entering. Do the same before entering any closed room.

5.  Present a professional appearance at all times. Dress appropriately and drive a clean car.

6.  Promise only what you can deliver, keep your promises and show by your action.

7.  Tell them what you know and not what you think.

8.  Leave your business card at showings if you are not prohibited.

9.  Never criticize property in the presence of the owner.

10. If sellers are home during a showing, ask their permission before using the bathroom.

11. Advise other brokers’ clients to direct questions to their agent.

12. Communicate clearly to avoid misunderstanding

13. Be aware of and respect cultural differences

Respect for the Property

14. Be responsible for everyone you allow to enter listed property

15. Never allow unaccompanied access to property without appointment e.g. home inspection and etc.

16. Enter property only with appointment, even if you have a lockbox key or combination number

17. When the occupant is not home, leave the property as you found it. (lights, heating, cooling, window treatments) If you see something is amiss, call the listing agent/broker immediately.

18. Do not allow anyone to drink, eat, dispose of trash, smoke, and bring pets.

19. If the weather is bad, take off shoes and boots at the entranceway before entering the property.  Or as instructed by listing agent in showing remarks.

20. Make sure heating and cooling controls are set correctly in vacant properties.

Respect for your fellow REALTORS®

21. Identify your REALTOR® and professional status in all contacts with other REALTORS®

22. When showing a property, notify the listing agent/broker if there appears to be inaccurate information on the listing

23. If you are the listing agent, share important information about the property, including the presence of pets, security systems, and whether sellers will be present during showings.

24. Avoid the inappropriate use of language

25. Do not prospect at other practitioners’ open house or similar events.

Great list Kwee. I think these basics should be explained to each new agent in the business because they often are thrown into the wild business waters without knowing which rules they have to follow.

The most important part for me that every professional has to respect the seller's ownership of the listed home and needs permission to go in. But not everyone respect that. The respect is not limited to property but also to the seller's privacy and his/her family members whoever that might be.

Great list - these should all be 'common sense' behavior but some folks do need reminding from time to time - I think I'll take the time to go to the car wash now . . . .

I can't imagine someone using a bathroom with the owner present, without asking permission, but I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.
