Cities Raising Taxes -- They Don't Get It!

Having my coffee this morning and reading the local Sun-Sentinel I was floored by the article on the front page of Section B.  You can read it here http://www.sun-sentinel.com/.  71% of the voters in this county and 64% state wide voted for Amendment 1, yet here we go with more tax requests.  I fired off the following letter to the editor and I'd like your ideas:

I just finished reading Juan Ortega's Tuesday front page article Some cities considering tax increases.  I can not believe the audacity of these politicians. Three quarters of the voter told them by approving Amendment 1 that taxes in Florida are TOO HIGH, yet here they are back at the well looking for more.  We worked very hard to ensure the passage of Amendment 1, and we're making a claim right now that we'll work very hard to oppose any local tax increases!  The voters have spoken - LISTEN!  We understand that every budget has "Have tos" and "Want Tos" included.  We're telling you there is no money for "Want tos" and you should get the spending on "Have tos" in line. The South Florida version of the Boston Tea Party has commenced, but we won't throw any tea overboard - we'll just work to throw unenlightened politicians out of office!

I agree, they don't get it. Also they should have plenty of money as there are more houses and all these new houses are being taxed at a higher assessed value.

The same thing is happening in NY.  The worst is the school tax.  I'm as liberal as they get and I have a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology.  I even adjunct as a professor at several local universities - BUT I fail to see why the median salary should be $85,000 for 9 months of work  a year for a school teacher!  The legacy costs and exemption to NYS income tax and the over-the-top health care insurance get to me too.  Like I said, i believe in strong unions,  but this is out of control!  9% last year. another 9% this year - how much longer before people finally start voting DOWN these budgets?

I completely agree, these politicians just don't get it.  They can't keep spending money like it grows on trees.

Thank you all for your thoughts -- I'm planning on attending the budget meetings, but I'll keep my big mouth shut -then expose them for what they are!

Thanks again,

Caey,

But Margate has such a wonderful water park now!!!  When private enterprise has a hard time making money on a venture, what give the city leader the right to try it, and think they're going to turn a profit, or  break even. When the money was pouring in from the jump in home prices, these cities couldn't spend the money fast enough. Now every other city has a water park, or how about traffic circles, I love those. By the way hows the new city center coming? As you can tell, this is one of my pet peeves.

Michael,

Funny you should mention city center. When I stumped for Amendment 1 on election day I spent a few hours with Commissioner Talirico.  He's a nice guy, but I asked him why the city was into re-development and he told me someone has to do it.  I said, if there was a buck to be made someone would already be doing it.  I told him I love property development! I just don't want the city doing it with my money.  If I want to develop property, I'll do it myself.  The conversation was short lived after that.
