Discover Eat Experience - Kang Kang Food Court in Alhambra

Kang Kang Food Court in Alhambra

Do you like finding inexpensive places to eat? The undiscovered or those places just under the radar? Are you adventurous with what you put in your mouth? How's your command of Mandarin? Or Cantonese or Shanghainese?

If you are looking for an eating(you notice I didn’t say dining) adventure -- you may want to try the Kang Kang Food Court in Alhambra.   Located at the northeast corner of Valley and Garfield in a non-descript shopping center(actual address is 27 E Valley Boulevard) is the Kang Kang Food Court.   Understated may be too generous -- set up cafeteria style -- it does help if you have a native speaker to assist you the first time -- I’d call the selection “street food”  -- simple yet quite tasty and according to my sources - quite authentic.

There are many choices but let me point out one of, if not, my favorite thing on the menu --- Shanghai style pan fried dumplings, shumei or small bao --- be careful - when you stick your chop stick in the first stab -- err, I mean time  -- hot juices start flowing from this pork filled delicacy.  Prices -- more than reasonable.   Don’t speak the language?  Pointing is allowed.    You order(and or point), you pay, they deliver to your table.

If you are looking for something interesting in food, you are likely to find it in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County.  If you are looking for something interesting in real estate -- ask me -- I have almost 20 years of experience finding unique and the interesting properties throughout the San Gabriel Valley and the adjacent Northeast foothill communities within the city of Los Angeles - contact me at 818.516.4393 cell or michaeljacobs@coldwellbanker.com.

Michael-I am not sure how adventurous I am when it comes to food. That pic isn't something I would think you could eat with chopsticks unless you stab it and eat it that way. LOL  Great localism post

Sharon - yes, stabbing the dumpling is important -- to allow the hot juices inside to be released.

Nothing better than finding those great places to "eat" at reasonable prices Michael.  Kang Kang Food Court sound like it's just the ticket.  I had many favorite eating places when I lived in NYC.....dining was a whole different ballgame.  I had a lot of favorites in that category too, for special occasions.

Glad you told me it was a dumpling because I didn't know what it was. Smiling

Dorie - it's a lot easier to be adventurous when you have the right guide in the beginning -- otherwise looking around the room to see what's popular.

Roger - reasonable is definitely a good thing especially when experimentation is part of the plan.  You never know what you may discover.

Sharon - glad to "help" you out.   The pan fried dumpling has multiple names.   Have a great day.

Michael - This reminds me of dining in a foreign country, but I don't have to get on a plane for hours to enjoy it.  ~ "Don’t speak the language? Pointing is allowed. Hi Michael - I've developed my pointing technique to a fine edge over the years eating at places like that - you get adventure, the illusion of risk, and a usually wonderful experience.

Hi Michelle - with so many restaurants in our area, I'm glad I received the recommendation to try Kang Kang -- otherwise it might have been lost in a sea of other places to grab a quick bite.

Hi Alexandra and Ron -- they are open seven days a week --- they open for breakfast until late into the evening -- it's definitely not high end dining.  No ambiance.   No fine china -- tea is poured into paper cups -- televisions blaring in the background -- but according to those who know much more about these things than I do -- it's the real thing.
