Prospective homebuyers are thrilled about the multitude of homes for sale in San Diego, California, the Golden State. And what's not to love about California? Beautiful weather year-round, gorgeous beaches, great beach-city lifestyle, everything about California is appealing to young professionals, retirees or anyone interested in living a great life.

San Diego is one of the state’s biggest and most vibrant cities. The proximity to Orange County, Los Angeles, and the Mexican border make this city eclectic, interesting, and upscale, all at the same time. Similarly, the housing in San Diego runs the gamut from mansions near the ocean, to carefree-living in Pacific Beach, to reasonably-priced and centrally located cottages or ranch-style homes that the average family can and should afford. Because of its relatively late development in comparison to the rest of the United States, and due to the abundant land that greeted settlers to California, homes there tend to be large and sprawling, with the ranch-style home being one of the most popular models statewide. San Diego is no different, except that its downtown area is just as impressive as several other large cities nationwide, and can satisfy even the most committed city-dweller. Want the privacy of country living? San Diego has that too, as several of its neighborhoods have houses sitting on impressively-large lots, averaging more than one acre, where you can feel like you’re living in a rural community despite being 5 minutes from some of the best shopping and eating in the country.

One of the best things about living in California, particularly San Diego, is the availability of eclectic, amazing food. Mexican food is king here, and the most authentic restaurants are found throughout the city, serving Sonoran or Norteno style Mexican food for reasonable prices to the local community. That is not the only option, as amazing New York style pizza, upscale steakhouses, and more are found in the city’s fun and exciting Gaslamp District. The size of the city also means that you can find several great shops here, from department stores to boutiques and luxury retail outlets.

California is unique in that it is essentially a desert sitting on an ocean. That combination of climates leads to temperatures averaging 70 or 75 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, with cool breezes, dry air, and a relative lack of humidity found in East Coast cities. Homes rarely need air conditioning and several boast large swimming pools so that residents can truly enjoy the climate.

Drive about an hour inland and you will find incredible natural sites, including multiple state parks and national forests. There is great hiking on the coast and inland, and San Diego boasts a thriving community of outdoor sports-enthusiasts. Speaking of sports, San Diego finds itself home to the Chargers in the NFL and the Padres in the National League in baseball. Its brand-new Petco Park is accessible by public transit and is an amazing place to take in a baseball game. The Mexican border is less than a half-hour away, which serves as a gateway to the gorgeous Baja Peninsula, a popular day or weekend-trip destination. The city of Ensenada, located about 2 hours from San Diego, is a particularly beautiful part of Baja that residents enjoy traveling to.

There are multiple major colleges in San Diego, from the party-school atmosphere of San Diego State University to the quiet, Lutheran University of San Diego, that has one of the nation’s top 40 law schools. Most students in these schools come from the city of San Diego itself, because students who grow up in a San Diego house don’t want to go away to school due to the amazing lifestyle.

You can’t beat the options available to you if you buy a home in San Diego. It is a big city-meets small town atmosphere, which is envied by other communities nationwide.
