South Metro Atlanta’s Premier Beach & Olympic Facility
What? You didn’t know Clayton County had a beach? AND an Olympic facility? Well, that leads me to my first tip: Discover International Park in Jonesboro GA near Stockbridge GA. It's a favorite summertime escape for families in the know in the south metro area....and yes, it has a beach!
The beach and adjacent facilities were developed when Jonesboro GA hosted the beach volleyball competition of the 1996 Olympic Games. Now it offers Atlantans a welcome respite from the summer heat, with swimming, sunbathing, and of course, beach volleyball all on the menu.
But about the celebration on Independence Day.....
It's Not Just the Fireworks
Of course, it wouldn’t be the 4th of July without them, but fireworks are not the only reason to be in the park on that evening. There is also live entertainment on the bill, with a free concert at the Lakeview Amphitheater.
Need something for the kids? All of the regular park amenities are available -- play areas, tennis and volleyball courts, soccer and baseball fields, hiking and biking trails, fishing lakes and picnic areas -- and the popular miniature golf course will be there as usual.
More Insider Tips
Bring Your own water!: You don't want to end up paying $4.00 for a bottle of water. I like to throw mine in the freezer for a little while so it's icy cold before I leavethe house.
Throw some things in a backpack: Don’t want to lug a picnic basket to the park? Why not try your backpack? You might throw in a light blanket and a few munchies ......and don’t forget that water or something to drink.
Parking: You'll likely have to park on grass and walk tothe heart of the activities, so wear the right shoes. Come early to get parked more quickly and grab a choice spot.
Bring Cash: There might be vendors on hand for your convenience. Many vendors these days take cards, but it's usually much faster if you have cash. Some vendors will only take cash, so make sure you don't miss out on your favorite delicacy because you don't have cash.
