baby piglets, child deduction irs rules, economic stimulus act 2008,tax deductions, mooers realtyWe all like the sound of valuable tax breaks for businesses. But what if you have a large family? A lot of piglets around the trough? Good news for you too. On February 7, Congress passed the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008, which President Bush signs this week. If you have a large family, and there is no cap on the number of children, you qualify for an additional $300 for each qualifying child. The definition of a qualifying child is the one used for purposes of claiming the child tax credit outlined by the IRS regulatons. Specifically, the child must under age 17 as of December 31 and be the taxpayer's qualifying child for dependency exemption deduction purposes. In addition, the child must be either the taxpayer's son, daughter, stepson, or stepdaughter. Or a descendent of someone such as the taxpayer's grandchild. Or the taxpayer's brother, sister, stepbrother, or stepsister. Or a descendent of your brother, sister, step brother or step sister such as the taxpayer's niece or nephew. This could mean a big help for some with unique family situations so this act is way way more than just a check being mailed out and that's it. As with any tax advice, you let the folks you circle with know that there is more than the check's in the mail provision. Check with a tax accountant or tax attorney for clarification on how everyone can benefit from the legislation. If you are in Rotary or some other civic group, while not have a member that is a CPA outline the specific changes to prepare for them before being in the hot seat with a clock ticking come April 15th of that tax year! How many piglets are you able to deduct when you stop and think about it?

Man.....and I thought I couldn't be any more against the stimulus package!  Let me get this straight.....the government is giving us an additional incentive to have more kids?  Kids are expensive!  Not just for the parents, but for the community!

Instead of giving those that have a lot of kids MORE money, they should be penalizing them!  The way it is now, over-population is what is killing this planet.  People are going to have to wake up and realize that this sort of thing can't keep going on forever....right now, we're like a cancer to the planet.  Global Warming?  I think that it's the planet having a fever!

Bob...write your congressman...thanks for popping in.  We have an average of 1.6 kids in the country I think I read.  In many countries, one and a male ties it up otherwise they leave them by the road to fend for themselves.  Hear what you are saying but once the kids are here, we have to look out for the kids too!

I am unclear on one thing.  Do the children have to be under 17 by December 31 2007 or December 31 2008. I have twins that turned 17 in Jan of 2008 and I don't know if they qualify.

I think it is 2008 but will check around. As every good broker would advise, you should see a qualified tax accountant to tax attorney hopefully with a CPA gold star plaque on the office wall.  There are other elements like business equipment, etc to ask him/her about too.  I have always bought new jeeps every few years, but in 2001, there was a deal to expense business equipment..something like $20,000 right off the top for business equipment and if a vehicle weighed more than I think 5500 gvw, that "piece equipment" was covered so bought an Excursion for the size to haul customers around cause it outweighed the cheap and with that boost, was cheaper to own than a new jeep.  Sold the Excursion to a guy who took it to St Thomas.  If I was a retire Ford Excursion, that is where I would want to live!
