In and Around Tampa Bay
Just a quick update on what is happening in and around Tampa Bay...
Channelside - During a recent inspection of Channelside Bay Plaza, eighteen fire code or safety violations were found. This is a concern for the Port of Tampa with the upcoming 4th of July festivities being only two weeks away. The Port of Tampa sent a letter to the Irish Bank Resolution Corp that currently owns the complex requesting that the repairs be made. The Irish Bank has complied with this request. One item, a loose guardrail, still needs to be repaired. All of the other repairs have been made. Representatives for both the Port of Tampa and the Irish Bank Resolution Corp will meet on Sunday for a re-inspection. The Port of Tampa wants to be sure the repairs have been completed before the annual 4th of July fireworks show.
Tampa Riverwalk - Earlier this month, on June 4, 2013, Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn announced the final leg of The Tampa Riverwalk. The final 1500 feet of the downtown Riverwalk will run underneath the Kennedy bridge linking Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and MacDill Park. First envisioned over forty years ago, this final leg will complete the Tampa Riverwalk project. When this section is complete, the 2.2 mile downtown Tampa Riverwalk will connect Channelside to Tampa Heights. It will be exciting to see this vision for downtown Tampa become a reality!
The St. Petersburg Pier - The businesses at the St. Petersburg Pier closed on May 31, 2013. This week, as of June 17, 2013, the approach to The Pier reopened for fishing and pedestrian use. The inverted pyramid remains closed. Also this week, both the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and Wow Our Waterfront St. Pete called for the city to cancel The Lens contract. Voters will now decide the fate of The Lens with a referendum on the August 27th ballot.
Stay tuned for upcoming events for celebrating 4th of July in Tampa Bay...
