Moon photography can't be that hard

Close moon

In decades past, I thought I had moon photography down to a reasonable procedure.

I knew the formula for the size of the moon on 35mm film according to focal length of the lens, and the approximate exposures for film of different types and speeds. When the films were processed, I would have a reasonable expectation of success ( or at least I might have had a valuable experience).

Tonight the moon has been close, and bright (as well as unobscured), the biggest, brightest closest moon for the year.

Then into digital wonderland, (and the challenges). Messages on the screen indicated that a highlight (the moon) was preventing a shot. Forget automatic. Move to shutter priority, then to aperture priority, go read instructions on variable ISO, moon too small in frame to allow auto focus to work ~ all the challenges were there.

The results were, to say the least, different. Thank goodness for post processing.

By tomorrow night I may have re-educated myself, and can hurl myself into a RE-DO.

I will depend you folks for providing pics.

Thanks

Good luck on that.  I will choose to look at your photos rather than bother taking my own.  It has been a long time since I performed any night photography.

Noah - your location with element of water sounds enticing. You may yet get a clear night tonight.

Bob - I work with what I've got, hence variations from different settings. In some shots I got color, in others greater detail ~ such is the digital experience.

Wayne - you've often remaked well on my experience of life being a big adventure. It produces wonders everywhere likely to take me forever to enjoy.

Roger - glad to have been of help. Night photography is on the upsurge again with little bands the world over producing very artistic results of the night sky. Often I am just an observer.

Larry, I like the moon photos you posted.  I have tried numerous times and have never been happy with my photos.  I'm looking forward to your future photos and hope to get some tips from you so I can try again someday.  Hope you are having a great week.

Gary - all the better from hearing from you again. My Sunday shots produced similar results. These were handheld. Somehow a lot of data is recorded in RAW to cover personal shortcomings. Hope you are maintaining health and well being.
