The Fourth of July in New Milford, CT. What's on tap for 2013?

New Milford CT 4th of July 2013We have lots of activities going on in New Milford to celebrate the 4th of July this year. Fireworks this year are scheduled for Friday, July 5th at full dark (approximately 9:30 pm). But there is much, much more going on downtown!

In preparation of all the events being held on the New Milford Village Green, the town will be closing the crossover across from the town hall at 2:30 pm, and Bank St will be closed at 3:30 pm to traffic.

  • The Lions Club carnival on Youngs Field will be open at 6:00 - 11 pm on the 4th, 5th & 6th.
  • I95 will be on Bank Street beginning at 5:00 pm to help heat up the celebration
  • Water Witch Hose Company No. 2 will be offering rides on a fire truck. (I know three grandsons who will love this one)
  • Beginning at 6 pm the Women's Club of Greater New Milford will be making a giant birthday cake
  • 6:30 pm is the opening ceremony including the Chamber of Commerce, Curtis Thompson singing the National Anthem, an invocation and the Color Guard from Andrew B. Mygatt VFW Post 1672.
  • 7:00 pm, Higher & Higher (courtesy of Water Witch Hose Company No. 2)
  • 8:00 pm, Malone & Lads (courtesy Water Witch Hose Company No. 2)
  • At full dark the fireworks will commence from Fort Hill/Still Meadow. (appx. 9:30 pm). Remember, during the fireworks Fort Hill Rd, Peagler Hill and Town View will be closed.
  • For those chosing to stay downtown to view the fireworks, I95 will be playing patriotic music on Bank Street during the event.

In the unlikely event of rain (tongue in cheek as we seem to have storms in the forecast for the foreseeable future) only the carnival and fireworks will be held on Saturday, July 6th. Let's hope the weather holds out and that we are able to celebrate a full day of events for the 4th of July celebration in New Milford, CT this year!

Independence Day Facts:

In a letter to his wife Abigail Adams, John Adams wrote the following:

"The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more."

Mr. Adams was off by 2 days, however we still do celebrate in much the same fashion! July 2, 1776 the now most important document that all Americans hold dear, the Declaration of Independence, was approved in a closed session of Congress. July 4, 1776 was the day the Declaration of Independence was made public.

There is a wide spread belief by historians that the actual signing took place in August of 1776, despite the fact that Ben Franklin, John Adams & Thomas Jefferson all wrote that they had indeed signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776.

Did you know that three Presidents died on July 4th? They were the second, third and fifth President of the United States.

Both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, former signers and Presidents, died 50 years later, on July 4th, 1826.

James Monroe (not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, but he is considered one of our "founding fathers") was the third President to die on this day in 1831.

And one President (so far) was born on Independence Day, Calvin Coolidge, our 30th President of the United States, was born on July 4, 1872.

One other very important fact, my business associate, Liddy Adams is a direct descendant of John Adams!
