A Tale of Two Very Different Restaurants

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Austin Texas Homes, LLC 453249

There are a couple of restaurants in the La Frontera shopping area in Round Rock that I felt compelled to write about, for drastically different reasons.  One of them has consistently provided superior service, and the other one....well, let's just say that we haven't returned in a long time after a truly bad experience there.

Schlotzsky's Deli specializes in sandwiches, and my kids also really enjoy their individual pizzas.  This has become a mainstay for us after church, since it is a bit less crowded than some of the other "sit down" restaurants on Sunday.  During the week, I enjoy meeting with my agents there sometimes, or with clients or friends.  They offer free wifi, which is a nice bonus.

Although I am not close friends with the managers there, they do know me now, and two of them always make an effort to greet me when I show up, and they are VERY good with the kids, too.  Not long ago, they brought out a free platter of cookies and handed them out while we were dining.  Good service?  No - GREAT service!

Schlotzsky's is also exceptionally clean, including their restrooms.  The employees are constantly moving around cleaning, and they appear to be happy and well-managed.  Basically, I have yet to have had a bad experience there, after probably 30+ visits to this establishment.

Meanwhile, in the place right next door....

Applebee's has a salad that my wife and I both really enjoy, and on occasion we used to take the kids there UNTIL...

We showed up one evening, and we were greeted by the hostess, who seemed confused that we had five people in our party (me, my wife, and our three children).

As a side note, I have noticed that restaurants have very limited table sizes in general.  Typically, they have:

  • Table for two
  • Table for four
  • Family Reunion Size (seats up to 12)

Why is this exactly?

At any rate, sorry for my digression.  After the hostess realized that we needed the gigantic corner booth, she proceeded to seat us without bothering to clean underneath the table.  THIS WAS A RED FLAG.  I wasn't too worried about it, since we would probably make it even more messy with three kids.

We requested a high chair for the baby, and waited while she went to retrieve it for us.  My wife put the baby in the chair, then began to buckle her in.  It was at this point that things went further awry.  The high chair and straps were absolutely filthy.  They didn't have another one available, so we asked to speak to the manager, who took a good while to get to our table.  My wife explained that the high chair was really dirty, and she said (verbatim):

"They get detailed every night."

Every night?  I used to manage a restaurant for several years, and I required these to be cleaned after every USE.  Do you realize how often they are used through the course of one busy day?

My wife, with extreme calm, said to the manager, "I want you to just touch this strap," as she held it up for the manager to get a closer look.

"No."

WOW!  I couldn't help myself at that point.

I blurted out, "You have just proven our point.  You aren't even willing to touch it, but you want us to put our child in there?"

We stayed and ate for some reason (sans high chair), and the food was actually decent.  Later, before we left, my wife took our older daughter to the restroom.  Now, to fully appreciate this part of the story, you must understand that I don't have kids that are obsessive-compulsive or even generally all that worried about cleanliness.  My daughter, who was barely six at the time, complained that the restroom was dirty.  MY daughter!  My child who would probably be cool using a truckstop bathroom.  My wife said that it looked as though the faucets and mirror had not been cleaned in about six months.  There was buildup there that would/could have been easily rectified with a cursory cleaning, but someone had been sadly remiss there.  Gross!

So, needless to say, we will continue our loyal patronage of Schlotzsky's and we will continue to be silently repulsed by the thought of returning to Applebee's, or at least the one in Round Rock.

To reiterate, do go here:

Schlotzsky's Deli  2700-B Parker Dr., Round Rock, TX 78681

Do NOT go here:

Applebee's  2700 Parker Rd, Round Rock, TX 78681

And the idea of complaining to Applebee's is a good one for them...but not for you. They'll just give you a free dinner at Applebee's. What kind of gift is that after an experience like this?

As the mother of a three-year old, I can't even begin to think about what that strap must have been like!  It makes me sick....ewwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Jason,  I've had just the opposite experience here.  The Schlotzsky's in our area eventually closed due to poor service.  Meanwhile, several Applebee's are alive and well and I eat lunch there often.

SIMON - Your comment made me laugh.  I haven't heard of Too Jays, but Schlotzsky's is a chain headquartered here in Austin.

KEN - Nicely played.  I am a little surprised that it didn't cure him of his practical joking.  Yuck!

NANCY - I wouldn't miss Applebee's if they closed up shop here either.

DON - This is an interesting suggestion.  I will probably share it with the Schlotzsky's managers, but after our experience with the Applebee's lady, I doubt that I will bother to tell them.

DEB - This is an excellent point, and I hope that this post is found by many who might otherwise consider eating there.

LISA - Maybe I will share it with the headquarters for Applebee's.  That is a great idea.

JOEY - Both of your comments made me laugh, as usual.  I thought the statement about the high chairs getting details every night was absurd.

MARLENE - Basically, you could scrape a sheen of filth off of the high chair itself, and the strap was only part of the nastiness.

GINGER - Simply put, you got it right.  It was pretty gross.

MELISSA - I made myself a bit hungry thinking about Schlotzsky's, then I cured it by thinking about Applebee's.  Who doesn't love the Fonz?

DAN - That was really why I made sure that this post was VERY local in nature.  I can't speak for all Applebee's or all Schlotzsky's either.  This is just our experiences at these two places in Round Rock, and they just happen to be right next door to each other.

Jason- I  just LOVE Schlotzsky's. Nestor took me to eat in one in Houston and San Antonio and I got hooked on their salad bar! We don't have any here in our part of the world but we have Too Jay's which I really enjoy too. They do not have that great salad bar though.

ALAN - Me, too.  We need to go again sometime soon.

MARIA - That is a weird phenomenon, isn't it?  I feel like their heads might explode when we show up with a party of five.

KATERINA - I love it, too.  I guess Too Jay's must be similar, since Simon also mentioned it above.

I've been  to the deli before, in Pittsburgh I think, and loved it!  The Applebees sounds so gross...have  you seen the movie Waiting?  you should, it is absolutely true to life and is why I would never complain before getting my food, I would just leave.  Have you read the book Raving Fan?  It's awesome and a quick read, all about giving great customer service...I loved it!

I don't know buddy, isn't this a little TMI???

"Schlotzsky's is also exceptionally clean, including their restrooms."

I can hardly look at a menu now.... LOL!

KRISTA - I actually own that movie - my wife and I think it is hilarious.  I used to manage a restaurant, so I know what can happen in the kitchen, unfortunately.  We are always careful not to upset the actual waitstaff.  It was just the hostess and the manager.

JIM - I agree wholeheartedly.  Local management makes a big difference.

JENNIFER - What's TMI?  What's LOL?  I am not good with acronyms - sorry.  But seriously, I don't think it's too much info.  It shows a level of cleanliness that is not always found (as with the Applebee's).  Sorry to repulse you - I know that you are easily offended.  :-)

Jason.... This does bring a highlight to posting on good resturants. I haven't posted on the bad ones... Maybe I need to start with Jade Dragon here in town... they recently made the news. Was asking a fellow Realtor just the other day if he heard about them on the news.. his face turned beat red and said..." Don't mess with me like that... We just ate there " he said he will NEVER go eat there again. Good Blog idea ?

I used to think the same thing: "Not a big deal, my kids are going to make a mess anyway."

To any of you young fathers out there: A dirty floor is a big deal. It's reflective of the type of service you are going to get that night.

Applebees?  Man Jason, you should be rollin' with the big boys now!  I thought you'd be going to Red Lobster right next door!:)

I have never liked Applebees anyway.  You just made it real easy:)  I'm going to have to use that "touch this strap" move next time, I like that one.

Jason - I agree with some of the other commenter's you should point Applebees towards this post. It will be interesting to see what they do to rectify the situation. there is nothing like an unkept establishment to turn people away in droves not just this one but chain wide.
