Yep. I'm inspired by my 90 year old Mom.

Me and my Mom on the American RiverMy Mom's a trooper.  She's ramping up her one mile a day walk so she can walk the Susan G. Komen 3 Day in Seattle this September, ONE DAY AFTER HER 90TH BIRTHDAY! She's a frikken trooper.

It started with a tearful viewing of photos of my 60 mile walk last weekend in the San Francisco 3 Day.  "Sal, if I was younger I would have walked with you.  We need a cure." She cried at the thought of her sister Margaret, who died at 52 of breast cancer.  She cried again, talking of my brother Joe who died at 44 of cancer.

Then she cried again retelling of her numbness on the day I called with my news: "Mom, I have breast cancer". (7 year survivor - yeah, baby!!!)

Being the pushy demanding take-no-prisoners never-say-you-can't persuasive daughter that I am, I formed team "Nancy at Ninety", and promptly registered us both for the Seattle walk this coming September - cooincidentally the day after she turns ninety.

Now there's no going back.  We are all in.

We need to raise $2300 each (link at the bottom ;) and we will do it by walking flyers in her Sun City senior neighborhood. Heck, maybe she will find a walking partner. Right now she walks alone.

My team at mile 59 of the susan G. Komen 3 day in San Francisco, 2013

Am I inspired by her?  Dang right I am.  And I can't wait to see the other walkers as they try to process that a ninety year old women is setting off on a 20 mile journey.

Do I think she can walk all 20 miles each day?  Heck no!  But she can walk 1 mile today and by the time we get to September, I bet she can walk 4 or 5!  Can you imagine?

So cheer her on with your comments below, and I will share them with her.  I'll even share my Mom with you if you want to join Team Nancy at Ninety! We'll walk in support of grey being the new pink!

GO MOM!!!!

What an inspiring story Sally. Many families have been effected by cancer, I admire those that take action toward a solution.

Sally, first of all, great to see you! But wow, I nearly fell off the couch, 60 miles? OMG... way to go!

Now as far as mom goes... I would not be surprised if she went 4 or 5 miles, heck with her age. I can see the apple didn't fall far from the tree ...

Way to go Sally's Mom, that is just awesome!!!!! Wow!!!!! I am waiting for the news of how many miles you did go, and I am sure you will put me to shame.

You are both an inspiration.

Tom - thanks so much.  It feels good to be doing something positive for a cure.  when I read all that Komen has done in supporting research - millions each year - I realize that this is what I can do to help bring the cure.  It will take research to find the cause and cure for breast cancer.  Every one of us has been impacted in some way by a friend or family member who has had cancer. ne is 8 women will be diagnosed by breast cancer.  We need a cure.

Andrea - It is pretty amazing, isn't it.  When we started my walking partner and I were walking 3 miles at a stretch.  I couldn't believe we would ever be able to do 20 miles, but we did it.  Just a slow progress of walking more each time.  and my Mom??? She is amazing.  Every day she walks a few houses more.  But she will get there!

Now that the Seattle walk is behind us, I will tell you that Mom walked 5 miles the first day, and 4 the next day.  She was so awesome and had everyone inspired by her story of walking it on her 90th birthday.Team Nancy at Ninety at the Susan G. Komen 3 Day Walk in San Francisco, 2013
