Everything Tastes Better With Butter - Melinda PetersonThey say everything tastes better with butter.  Perhaps there's a shift of public opinion on that  fat fact.  In recent days, the media is having a southern picnic flinging buttery whoppers at a woman standing on a scaffold in the public square, wearing a Scarlet Letter on her chest.  It's her new brand... and it ain't 'B' for butter.

I don't have cable or satellite (by choice), so I haven't watched a stitch of interviews.  Although, I've certainly seen the flashing headlines on my MSN homepage.  While I'm not particularly a Paula Deen fan, I don't delight in hearing about anyone's fall from grace, celebrity or otherwise.  No one is perfect.

What intrigues me about this story is the human factor.  While many of us have NEVER used the 'N' word, we have in fact, all fallen short.  I count my blessings that none of my transgressions have been exposed for the whole world to see.  I'd surely want to run and hide, wouldn't you?

Will the Queen of southern cooking survive her branding?  The odds appear to be in her favor.  Like others, who've been knocked off their pedestals and humbled by public scorn and humiliation (some rightfully so), she'll pay penance for her slippery tongue.

Human frailty rises from the depths of stupidity, ignorance, pride, ego and selfishness, often teaching us the lessons we haven't yet learned.  Life is funny that way.  Perhaps there's a greater lesson here... one of tolerance, love, acceptance, humility and forgiveness.  While the jury of public opinion is still out, one fact remains true... butter always rises to the top ;-)

Mel - it's amazing the way the press will bring you up, sing your praises and then tear you to sheds for your transgressions (which we've all done at one time or another!) Think of Tiger Woods, Lance Armstrong, Colby Bryant, Michael Vick (the worst in my book for visously killing and abusing dogs)  - all superstars until their bad behavior caught up with them. Then the press reports on it ad nauseam. Just like Martha and many others, I think Paula will to some degree redeem herself, but like all the others, she's  changed her legacy and not in a good way. I think what she did was horrible, but I don't think she's a horrible person. However, we all have to accept the consequences of our behavior. I think many people like to point the finger so they take the focus off themselves. Very thought provoking post!

Well put my friend! We've all been prideful (to a fault), selfish, ignorant, egotistical, and rude. Sometimes on purpose, most often not. I haven't followed the Paula debacle, but you can't escape the photos and headlines. I cringe. I certainly don't condone bad behavior and/or people who are prejudice about others, but I do dislike it when anyone is sensationally dragged through the mud (over and over and over again) in public. Paula lives with her short comings and faults, like all of us live with our own. All of us don't need to be 'buttered' with hers... it won't make it taste any better ;O) Great post!

The Press can be brutal... huh Kris?!  Thank goodness our indiscretions aren't publicly displayed on every portal ;-)  Although, our local newspaper in Southern Oregon likes to print the teensiest of crimes for all to see... which is perhaps a deterrent for some.  I certainly don't condone Paula's slippery words or behavior... just making an observation that we're all human and we make mistakes.  Hope she takes it all to heart and is able to rise above it.

Thank you friend (Rene)!  Ditto on the list of faults... I cringe too!  There are some words/sentiments that should just never be uttered... it's perfectly okay with me if they strike them from the Dictionary all together ;-)  Extending the hand of forgiveness to those who are truly contrite for their actions is high on my list.

Mel, Clearly I missed something ... or I missed it all. I don't read the tabloids or watch the negative news feeds. I simply choose not to focus on negative.  I may inadvertently visit there from time to time and quickly leave because for the most part, it serves no good purpose.  Paula Deen must be in the line of fire.

Quentin Tarantino produces a movie wherein Actor Jamie Foxx uses this word 110 times.   They get Oscars and accolades.   Paula Deen says this word years ago, and is dragged to the Public Square for stoning.   Double Standard, or what?

You didn't miss much... Kathleen.  Just a roasting on both sides... where no one has clean hands or tongues ;-)

Haven't seen it... but I would cringe and not make it through the entire film... Fred.  Double standard... perhaps, but two wrongs never make a right... even if Jamie puts a foxy spin on it ;-)

Mel, I don't think movies carry a double standard   I'd hate to see a chlling effect simply because they use reality based language.

As for Paula Deen, being at gun-point could be viewed as a special circumstance--one in which y'all may act out of character.

That said, I hate her profiting from serving up diabetic speedballs while a diabetic herself.  That bugs me!

I feel like I need to chime in here but first I need to disclaim that I am SOUTHERN born and bred.

My great granddaddy is from DEEP GA and so was my granddaddy and my mom.

My granddaddy and his parents were farmers and he told many stories of working hand in hand with what we were raised to call coloreds.  That was before Political correctness said to call them African Americans.

Now I will say that in a culture where we have Haitians, Dominicans, Jamacians, etc, what is more correct?

With that said, if we used the N word, it meant a bar of soap on the tongue.  But yet even today, you hear it being slung around plenty and it is not by Caucasians.

Now, as for Ms Paula, I am with Mel when we must say grace and forgiveness for a slip of the tongue 30 years ago seems rather reasonable.

I am POLLOCK by birth, but do you know how many dumb pollock jokes I grew up with?  Did I sue anyone?  Do i own any major corporations because someone called me a pollock?

I was born a pollock and that is just the hand that God dealt me.  I don't go out and sue everyone that makes an insensitive comment about it.

It happens.  We are human.  And as for Paula, her charitable attributes and humane generousity should count for something.

It's not like she pocketed millions from saying one slip of the tongue.  She instead contributed millions from her earnings to many worthy charities and that was not from guilt but from a HUGE DECENT HEART and being a HUMAN.

So for those that find fault in her one HUMAN slip 30 years ago, how about some credit for being HUMAN for the rest of her life and being one of most generous business women on this planet.

And that from just a pollock with good southern upbringin'

Brian... I agree, context is important.  On the topic of 'theatrical productions using naughty words (and invoking double standards)'... I'm of the opinion that one can exercise their personal right of censorship by simply not supporting/paying to see a production that is offensive.  I don't take issue with story-telling with context, but rarely does the news media play by that set of rules.  Clearly the objective is to sell a sensational story... which is why perspective is subjective.  The absence of tolerance is never good, for it creates a breeding frenzy for labels, character assassination, and casting shadows of doubt on otherwise decent human beings (both sides appear guilty as charged).  No one knows for sure (other than Paula Deen) if her slip of the tongue is evidence of an underlying, deep-seated, lifetime sentiment of prejudice, or someone simply saying the darnedest thing under duress.  As for her diabetic speedball profiteering (LOL)... don't get me started on that one ;-)

Kevin... two disclosures in one comment thread... that's a wow!  I didn't know you were a Southerner and a Pollock... that's quite a loaded deck you've been dealt my friend ;-)  Sounds like you've been on the receiving end of prejudice... which has obviously made you stronger.  I agree, human is human no matter how we slice it.  When we ignore tolerance and side-step forgiveness, we assume the role of judge and jury.  I'm of the opinion... judge not, lest you be judged.  Forgiveness is something that anyone can afford to give... kinda like a get-out-of-jail-free-card ;)  That's not to say one should be a doormat for repeat offenders... exercising reasonable judgment is prudent when dealing with people who continually piss in your cheerios.  But... there's something to be said for the seventy times seven clause... that's an awful lot of forgiving in my book ;-)

You actually put into words how I've been thinking regarding the Paula Dean scandal. I too am not a particular fan of hers - however, to watch a fall from grace is sad to witness. Honestly, it's difficult to know her heart and intentions. However, I'm with you - forgiveness is a sign of humanity - and a recognition that we all can make mistakes. No doubt, her own conscious - and the foolish use of an ugly word will continue to cause personal suffering. ( Therefore, no need for the public lashings) My heart aches for anyone who has to learn the hard way.

And that my dear friend... is the reason you're a Kindred Spirit indeed ;-)  Although, I think you said it much more eloquently than I... which is another thing I love about you!  Since I'm on this love fest... I'm missing your sultry voice... can you call me and leave me a cute message so I can save you on my voice mail?  Hee, hee.  Don't worry, I'm not turning... LOL... but you're definitely a hot and sultry chicky ;-)  Hope you and Bernie have a fabulous 4th Debb!  I'm headed to Scorcherville for a beachin' time!
