The Cost of Doing Business
Great perspective John, we do give out a lot of complimentary time and other resources while investing in those valuable relationships.
Have a great week

The Cost of Doing Business
What is considered the cost of doing business? Every business has overhead; rent/ mortgage, utilities, payroll, inventory, advertising...the list goes on. How do you determine which expenses produce revenue?
At our bed and breakfast, the Courtyard Country Inn B & B, we give away complimentary wine, beer, soda and bottled water. COMPLIMENTARY! I'm not bragging as it is standard practice in the industry. Beyond that there are the pens, key fobs, notepads, outdoor movies, bookmarks...giveaways. Did I mention the complimentary complete breakfast?
OK, we sell real estate and probably the biggest giveaway we offer is our time. I don't like to use the word 'free' as it implies it doesn't cost anything or have value...so, I use the word 'complimentary'. The only thing you're gonna get free from me is a smile!
This blog originated from another blog (comments) that questioned if we were 'scared' of losing business so we bent over backwards to 'kiss up'.
I guess my thoughts are if you are happy doing what you do...and can sleep at night...consider it 'complimentary' beer, wine, breakfast, outdoor movies, pens...
I have always believed that showing properties may or may not result in a sale...but if I treated the client as I would my father, mother, son, daughter...they may not buy but they would certainly recommend me to others. Isn't that a referral? I will never forget the 'lowly worker' that couldn't afford much...and didn't buy anthing but referred his boss...that did buy...for the big bucks...because I gave my time to someone others might consider less...
So, this blog...what do you consider a freebe complimentary use of your time and how do you consider it for value? Community Service might be how you choose to give of your time. If you can go to bed at night feeling satisfied...you are living the good life. All of us have shown properties to buyers that didn't buy...no income.
Free refills, extra napkins...you're kidding, right? A smile and good service...I'll be back.
