Bathroom Remodeling

Over or Under?

Anyone can create a basic bathroom. It’s designing a bathroom that meets your functional and aesthetic needs that’s the challenge. Choosing the right fixtures and materials can be the difference between designing a space that works and designing a space you can be happy with.

Choosing a Focal Point

A well-designed room always has a focal point - that one element that the room is built around. When it comes to the bathroom what you choose as the focal point can affect every other element in the room, including the room layout. Some base the entire look around a tile they really like. For others, it’s a faucet. Many build their bathrooms around their tub or shower choices. There’s no rule that says any one focal point is better than the other. The key is understanding what you want the room to be built around. For many homeowners, this can be a daunting task as they likely have found multiple design elements they want to incorporate. Talking to a bathroom design pro will help you get a better idea of what would work best for your space.

Finding the Right Fixtures

Choosing the right fixtures is one of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make, as this one detail can change the look of the entire room. Do you want a claw-footed tub or a sleek and modern one? What color do you want it to be? Are you going for a contemporary look or something more traditional? The fixtures you choose will have a big say in whether or not you achieve the look you’re after.

Cabinet Choice

Natural wood that’s dark or light? What about white or even black? Do you want flat, shaker, inset, or custom cabinet doors? How about the hardware? Clearly, when it comes to cabinets, you’ve got a ton to consider, and that’s before you even think about the countertop. If you’re the kind of person who likes to change out your decorating styles, be sure to choose a cabinet style that gives you the flexibility to do so. A cabinet pro will be able to help you identify the best choice for your tastes and budget.

Flooring

Recent trends have seen most homeowners opt for tile flooring, with many choosing natural colors that work well with a variety of looks. Ceramic tile is the clear favorite here, however, slate and marble flooring are also popular options. Keep in mind that they’re also more expensive and require more maintenance. Wondering how much you should spend? Our Cost Guide will show you what others in your area are spending on their flooring.

Choosing the Right Paint Color

The great thing about paint is that you can paint over it. Choose neutral-colored flooring and fixtures and you’ll have the option to change the look of the bathroom with a simple coat of paint. If you’re looking for a color that soothes, choose cool, paler colors like light blue or moss green. To make the room warmer choose dark and rich colors. Of course, neutral colors are never a bad option. Neutral is an especially good choice if you want to draw the focus of the room’s attention away from the walls. And while painting is a pretty straightforward DIY project, if you’ve got a lot of molding and trim to paint around, or simply prefer to have a pro tackle the job for you, hiring a skilled painter will save you the headache of doing the job yourself.
