In Homer, the girls went on an Alaskan Bear Adventures excursion while the boys went halibut fishing. We both had a great time!

Volcano in Alaska

Just the flight to the wildrness area was amazing. We got to see a volcano with water that never froze due to the heat from the volcano. There was also an amazing glacier that had a lake below that flowed and dropped ice into the ocean.

Many of you asked how close we were to the bears.

Some of you have already seen one of my bear shots and asked how close I was to the bears. Well... I was this close. :)

The hike to the bears was about 2 miles. It is not a "hard" hike, but the boots that you wear weigh a ton and they sink down in the mud when you cross the creeks, so it is very tiring. Don't get me wrong, I would do it all over again TOMORROW if given the golden opportunity!

The first bears that we saw were feeding on grass, laying on a log, and cooling off in a creek.

Wet Bear

We stopped for a snack break. A little farther from the bears.

We stopped for a snack break a little further from the bears. Jared (our pilot/guide) said that they had spotted a mama bear with two cubs on the beach. So we jumped up and hiked another 2 miles to see them.

And it was worth it!

We had a great time, and the guys caught lots of halibut while we were gone!

The guys went halibut fishing while we went bear hunting!

Joni, what an adventure!  I hope you had a telephoto lens for those brown bears!  I would be scared to get within a mile of them!  My nephew was stationed up at the AF base outside of Anchorage and he loved it up there in Alaska!

Hi Joni, What an adventure you are having in Homer!! Great photo ops!  Such a beautiful place.

I was there years ago visiting friends...it was in the fall and I saw the salmon running and mannnny bald eagles and moose with their young.

Homer is such a beautiful place!

George: Our plane ride over Denali was cancelled due to rain, so we missed out on one of the adventures, but it has been an amazing trip. We are winding things up now near Fairbanks. Tomorrow we visit the town of North Pole, Alaska and Thursday we will visit Arctic Circle, Alaska.

Bruce: We were less than 30 feet from them. It was awesome!

Donna: It was worth it! Some folks did not make it to the beach to see the momma bear and the cubs. :(

Gloria: We have seen many eagles, some eaglets in a nest, and lots of moose!! :)

Sharon: Thank you! It has been great!

Roy: I have lots of Alaska flower pictures for you! :)

Joanna: And the hubby said that their catch was small!!

Endre: You should make a trip to Alaska and see it for yourself!!

Christine: Thanks!! We will be at Arctic Circle, Alaska on the 4th of July!

Hi Joni,

Excellent pictures and especially love the halibut's hanging in a row. I have been to Alaska twice and enjoyed every second. We traveled by ship, bus, rail car and plane so we did not get as close to nature at times like you are in a RV. Enjoy your trip .

Hi Joni,

I found this blog via Bob Crane and his Virtual Traveller entry. Since Alaska is where I grew up, I love to see people enjoy its wild and magnifcient landscapes and creatures. It really is " The Last Frontier." Looks like you all had an amazing adventure.
